Hey folks, I ain't saying I'm right at all.  And I am listening to what you both are saying.  I am trying to Understand why doing the one is actually better than the other.  I didn't say I wouldn't do the single well folder thing.  I really haven't grasped why is all.  OK?

Well then, my friend...that's much better! You could have simply said that to begin with!
 :tearlaugh: :tearlaugh:

I can tell you why in just a few simple words....words like "cyclic redundancy check errors" for starters! I wrote a three page article on that subject many years back and explained how it's caused. The short version is that it's caused by moving compressed data back and forth over multiple drives, the headers get all jumbled up and the compression becomes unstable!

I am aware that there are tuts online teaching how to create multiple external runtimes...but am also aware that there are examples as to why this isn't for everyone! With benefits, also comes drawbacks!

I apologize if I misunderstood your question my friend...it's all good!

Many eons ago I learned that External Hard drives are wonderful tools....for backup and storage.  Not for working with programs and runtimes.  You can store those on the external hard drive as a backup, but that's about it.

Most folks figure it will save them room on their Computers HD if they run things from the externals....which it does...but how many are only using 50% of their hard drive to begin with?

And multiple hard drives are wonderful in a computer...if all of the programs and it's running components are all on the same drive....which is rarely done.

Case in point....there must have been 20+ programs downloaded on my friends computer that were never even opened....just downloaded....sitting...taking up room...and all out of date....

Housecleaning is something I've done from day one of my computing experience.  If I don't use it...I don't need it...get rid of it.

Clean and defrag often....saves a ton of room and does unscramble some of the scrambled.

But on my externals....I torture them....I'll fill them up until they scream for mercy :tearlaugh: :tearlaugh:

External HD's.  I have two USB HD's at the moment, and an external USB BluRay burner.  The two HD's are 1TB, and on the USB2 ports my old rig has, are pretty slow compared to the internal SATA3 drives.  Got 4 SATA3 HD's and 1 SATA3 BluRay burner/supermulti drive in this old box right now.  And a 750 watt single 12V rail PSU.  Got tired of replacing PSUs cause I was using the old BFG 8800 GTX OC 768 meg card so heavily.  Heh!  That one vid card ate 3 PSUs!  LOL!
But I am trying to make sure I have enough of the right kinds of juice to power everything I do now.   I reckon I am overdue a new mobo, CPU and RAM.   Seeing the issues the multicore AMD CPUs are having with ram, it wil be an intel quadcore (or more) cpu with hyperthreading.  I hope I live long enough to get that upgrade!  Ha!

On the Fatality motherboard I have in the beast there is a USB 3.0 port built in to the board that be where my external back up drive for the internal drives is installed at ... back side of the case with the extra heavy duty velcro holding in place completely hidden ...with no issues at all.

Hear you on the power supply issues tis why I have dual power supplies one for the graphics card and one for everything else.

That sounds like fun, J.  I can relate to your use of dual   PSU'S man!  The last one, a 600W dual 12v rail, overheated when the old 8800 GTX fan clogged and overheated.  The vid card is likely ok.  But the PSU smoked and went CRACK!  I was lucky the mobo didn't pop too.  I got a EVGA GT 740 SC 2 gig card.  Current draw is tiny compared to the 8800.  We'll see how it all works out.
Oh, you may recall my mentioning at times I was typing posts in the Attic on my Windoze phone.  well, thanks to you, I decided to dig into my tablet and see what I could get done.  This post is being done on it.  Your full installation of W10 can be set to not check for updates.  Effectively turning it off.  I think using only a local login facilitates that.  anyway, you shouldn't have to avoid all networking!

Firefox is working great on the tablet.  Using the Mail prog comes with W10.
