True, I was surprised when I have found out that here were so much nice things going on. I guess for me interest for older D&D Campaigns settings started with me trying to run Greyhawk Ruins adventure module about Castle Greyhawk and famous wizard that Gary Gygax probably played first in previous older campaigns...

Before Blackmoor was Chainmail, Tabletop wargaming. One reason for Levels etc, one figure was equal to so many warriors. When Gary started the fantasy, beyond Civil war rebels fighting Mynocians... Heros were established as being worth more than single units, to demonstrate luck, skill, gods favour.

I have read before that when Gygax started there were only warriors and wizard available to play, and he played wizards and later expanded all that, but it seems there is more to it...
