Pooka
|
Pookas are mischievious shapeshifters, found most often in mountainous rural areas of Ireland. They can be any shape, but are most often seen in the guise of dark horses with glowing eyes.
There are several stories of Pookas offering rides to unsuspecting drunk people, then taking them on a terrifying gallop over fences and bushes, eventually dumping them miles from where they left with no recollection of how they got there.
Small ponds and lakes throughout ireland are often called Pooka pools, or Pollaphucka, which means Devil's pool. After christianity spread to Ireland, many of these Pooka pools were renamed Saint Patrick's wells.
