Yep, the more usable and reliable the storage means is, the more we are likely to be using it!   I can see us with an old  index card file just full of SSD's, each with a matching index card with proper description on it.  Heh!

thelufias

To me Discs are a PITA so investing in something more usable is a better deal for me.  But still got a shitload of blank discs left LOLOL...and yes, BlueRay  :thud:...

McGrandpa

Ain't that the TRUTH man!   LOL!   Darnit, the SSD's prices are getting down to where it's almost feasible to use them in place of BluRay disks!!   I learned I could buy a 10 pack of 100 gig BD writables,  for about $100.   Lessee...nope, while that's nice, the price point for 25 gig writables is WAY lower at $35 for a spindle of 50.   That was what I spent some three years ago for this last spindle I bought.  And haven't even had to open yet!  But, I GOT em!   Then this last 2 TB 3D NAND SATA internal SSD was $179.   Yeah I keep looking around and the 1 TB and 500 GB ones are a LOT lower priced now.   If these things were a dollar per gig, well, no way.   But they are now like pennies on a gigabyte, and THAT is so doable!   :oD

thelufias

I learned that lesson years ago...and like you...before the portable HD's....I backed up all on everything from tapes to discs to exteranal storage sites...you name it...I used it...but glad I have my SSD's now. LOLOL

McGrandpa

Every drive I have does have some THING on it.   But, the "books" of optical disks still has some empty pockets in it!  And, the BluRay disks are the 25 gig variety.   I use them for everything permanent.   I have read there are 50 gig and even 100 gig disks.  Cool.  Walmart don't sell those though.   The big thing is that I have zero spinner hard drives in use now.  I still have like a dozen of them and they do start up.  But they are empty.  Some of them emptied themselves, sadly.   The nice thing is, like you, I didn't lose anything except my most recent "volatile" stuff, like what we are typing to each other.   But the FILES?   They go on a onboard SSD first, then a removable SSD in the dock, then on to BD disks and into the disk books.   Sound familiar?   I had to deal with my first (and only) 1 terabyte WD Caviar Black spinner drive simply disappearing everything on it, and then the tools found nothing at all wrong with the drive.  IT is supposedly in perfect health.  I removed it anyway.  And, in a test box, it did the same thing again, for no reason whatsoever.  Nothing was recoverable according to all the tools I tried.   Ok, so that was when I bought my first SSD.   In 2012.   And THAT little 460 gig drive?  It still has Win 7 on it, and still working fine.  Not being USED though it is installed in Bad Moon RYZEN.   I will remove and store it, intact, for the Kitchen rig.  :o)  It isn't like I don't have enough SSD's to do that now.  HA!
Oh, I also lost my 480 gig Caviar Black BOOT drive a few years ago.  It lasted to end of warranty plus one month.   That one dying was no big deal, as I  just simply activated the Win 7 Pro 64 bit installation on the 460 gig SSD.  No problemo!   But that one terabyte drive?  It had all my entire 800 gig RUNTIME on it.  I cried about that one.  I never lost any of the original zip files and stuff.  But, I DID lose all my INSTALLED stuff and the set up, posed, worked over FIGURES and scenes I had saved.  That made up some 2/3 of the runtime content!
Nuff said, I back that stuff up, as saved!

thelufias

I'm going to replace the hard drive in my oldie but goldie computer.  It crapped out.  Good news is...I never loose anything when hard drives do die.  I keep nothing on them.  A cheap fix and easy to do.

McGrandpa

WHEN the ponk mooches leave, I will build another one for the kitchen/dining area.   I can't now cause the "shes" have flooded the spare room (storage) with HER crappola, and literally buried MY stuff and refused to make a way thru theirs so I can get to mine.   If I got to do it, I will hire someone to carry all theirs to the dumpster.
:aaah!:
I am SUCH a nice guy!   Sometimes....

thelufias

Happiness can be found in many ways....and like you McG...a working computer is one of the things that make me happy LOLOL

McGrandpa

I am still happily surprised at times at just what BadMoonRYZEN *CAN* do, and do it pretty quick.    I Set up a single V4/M4 figure, get it all dressed up, posed, de-pokethru'ed and rendered.   Render time is About a minute, depending on the hair set.   Then I Set up half a dozen V4/M4/G2F/M plus dog-horse-birds, spend 4 hours setting up, dressing and posing... and takes about TWO minutes to render.  DUH.   That does make it easy, fixing the Oops and OH NO's forgot something's and hitting the RE-Render button.   A few times.   Heh!   I am very much enjoying my 2.5 year old *NEW* computer folks!

McGrandpa

I was looking for a smile, glad ya laughed, Cleve!

Um, that don't make that statement any less true though!   :OMFG:
