Part 2: Nazar



He regarded himself as businessman, entrepreneur and all round pillar of the community. Everyone else knew that Nazar Brutka was up to his neck in legally questionable practices. As his employee, iryna made every effort to work hard and not  involve herself too deeply in his affairs. After all, he paid his workers a good salary. More so than the other companies locally. Today, though, her mind was elsewhere and her thoughts had wandered away from their usual focus on the task at hand. The events that took place earlier were playing over and over in her head and inevitably, she had made mistakes in Nazar's financial transactions. The working day drew to a close and Iryna made her way to the little cafe to meet with her friends, Rada and Tanechka. They casually chatted about their day and Iryna's account of the  occurrence she was caught up in. They were completely unaware of how it would affect them all in the weeks and months to come...

Part 1: Iryna


August 22nd 2017. 8:34am.

Iryna Tkach waited under the steel grey of a Ukrainian morning. With considerably less patience than her fellow travellers, she mused, owing to the recent problems with her car. Still, she would have it back soon and not be reliant on the transport system for much longer. Her thoughts turned to the day’s work ahead and while she was preoccupied she started to feel that something was not quite right. Her pretty blonde hair started to stand on end and she glanced around for a reason why this might be happening. Others nearby had also noticed this strange occurrence. Their first thoughts were lightning but there was no indication of an approaching storm. A static charge continued to build all  around them and Iryna was suddenly aware of movement in the air. It was as though water was suspended above the ground, slowly rippling and swirling around. As everyone watched, trying to make sense of what they were seeing, a solid shape formed within the shimmering... something. Without warning there was a soundless blue-green flare followed by an intense shockwave. Bystanders in the immediate vicinity were knocked to the ground. Iryna’s first thought was that she had been hit by a lightning strike but getting to her feet she realised that whatever it was, this was not natural and it had gone as quickly as it came, leaving no trace of any kind. There was no damage anywhere, and no-one who witnessed it showed any signs of even the slightest injury. Everything was exactly as it had been just moments before...
