Title: McG's Place
Post by: McGrandpa on June 02, 2020, 02:11:58 AM
I will want very much to install my Win 7 Pro x64 on it.   The machine will be RYZEN 7 CPU based, with a Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI (rev. 1.0), and 32 gigs ofHyperX Fury 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM.

I already have and plan to use a handful of SSD's from 460gb to 2 TB, an aging old warhorse video card, a BFG 8800GTX OC 768 meg card, and a 750W power supply.  Then the assortment of USB peripherals.    Will use the current ATX mid tower case.   I have an old HP laptop and three tablets for just in case it won't run, for some reason.  My research tells me this should work fine.   Time Will Tell, as the addage goes!  :)

Anyone got any ideas about the 'Main 3' I've ordered to build on?

the new June 2020 computer build.   My 66th Birthday Present (to self).

Cash is limited, so will do the Johnny Cash "One Piece At A Time" Cadillac thing.  Kind of.

I have an ATX Tower case or two, old but serviceable.
1 750W ATX power supply
1 BFG 8800GTX PCIe video card
5 or 6 2.5" internal SSD's
1 Pioneer BDR 209M SATA internal BluRay rewriter
2 Acer LED backlight LCD monitors, 1 S240HL and 1 S230HL
several MS Intellimouse Optical USB's
a dozen USB wired keyboards, a couple wireless USB keyboards.
5 various WACOM pen tablets, on is a 8x6" Intuos 3, one is a 8x6" Graphire 3, one a 8x6" Graphire 4, one a bamboo Touch, one an old Graphire 5x3"

Basically, I plan to simply shut it down, lay on  its side, remove the old Motherboard, CPU and RAM, then install a new Motherboard, CPU and RAM.  Experience tells me this will be at least a day job.  I want to be very careful and get these things installed with no damage.   It's always nice when a machine starts up and RUNS the first time.   But there are no guarantees that's going to happen.  So, careful it is, as always.   I'm a pensioner, a disabled ol git, I just cannot afford to be wasteful!

Ordered/bought items that have not arrived yet:

Walmart.com-1st order
1 new WD 3D NAND 2TB internal SATA SSD - more storage
1 new 2.5 gallon wet/dry shop vac and mini attachment kit for electronics

Walmart.com- 2nd order
1 AMD RYZEN 7 3700X socket AM4 CPU with Wraith Prism fan kit - Due tomorrow June 4
1 HyperX Fury 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (Kit of 2)  - Due Monday or Tuesday, June 8 or 9
1 Gigabyte
AMD X570 AORUS Elite WiFi Motherboard (GA-X570AORUSELITEWIFI) Due June 15

the RYZEN CPU is a Matisse core, 7nm process, 65 Watt device with 8 physical cores and 16 hyperthreads.   Sounds impressive!

The only thing that bothers me is I MIGHT have to install Win 10 on it.   I won't much like that at all.

McG.

Happy Birthday and good luck with all that :). I don't know I like Win7 but lately been working with Win10 on my new lap top so I got used to it too. Right now I am defragmenting my disks after some file transfers (cleaning up videos, and moving them on other External HDs, now it seems i have about 500GB free on all 3 I have). :woohoo: For now I am saving for this year PC+ membership and probably after that will think of next desktop computer or something else (that is a car as both mom and I have problems moving and we still need to work and move from flat to house). This new laptop I am using now works great for more then year and I am just so happy as that means I can safely buy desktop let me check what they have... Ok here is only one with Nvidia Graphics but doesn't look good https://www.pc-gamer.me/shop_55941.html (https://www.pc-gamer.me/shop_55941.html) and better option without Nvidia graphics which I should add but it is HP and with monitor, which I might het as soon as I can :iminnocent: https://www.pc-gamer.me/shop_55534.html (https://www.pc-gamer.me/shop_55534.html)
I think I should wait a bit more to get a good desktop  :whatthe: :dancingknight: :havesum:

Sorry for double post, here is one used lap top that I could get for 600e with i7 and 32gb ram, it is 15 version. Here it says that it might do good with graphical apps and it might be better option then desktop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcnIo33QNfo

Milos, I like the look of that HP ZBook!

I have to concentrate on my desktop though.   I have been reading through the Support area on Gigabyte.com for this new motherboard, and the important drivers, the little ones that run the chipset, CPU and all the onboard functions...are listed for Win 10 only.   Sigh.

well at least I can get a new Windows 10 PRO (32 and 64 bit versions) for $199.99 at the M$ store.
Same place I bought my Win 7 Pro (32 and 64 bit versions).  They let me dl both versions as ISO files, I burned those and booted them.  Easy job that one.   They say this purchase will come with a USB3.0 media.  Right.  OK.  Spread a little more info on that toast ok?

You DO KNOW that you can't open any presents until your Birthday actually gets here....right   :iminnocent:

But....July 1st isn't that far away...unless you have presents already there that need to be opened or used....which makes for a long wait....though it isn't......somewhat.....

Confused yet?  If so....I've done my job.....If not.....I've got more to deep thoughts to share.... :java:

I'll wait if I have to, like there's a choice?   Hmm...too deep!    :coffeemaker:
Only damper I see looming over my virtual birthday cake is (shudder) having to put W10 on it just to USE it.  :o(

But I *AM* pretty antsy, like a little kid watching the post for that New TOY he *KNOWS* is coming, just for him!   Outside, I reckon I"m putting on the good show...inside I AM all happy and eager and anticipating and happy!   LOL!   :woohoo: :coffeemaker:

If something happens bad with the motherboard, I just might cry...

Not a lot going on in here, so I will indulge in a blow by blow Parts & Build!   :woohoo:

My delicious AMD socket AM4 RYZEN 7 - 3700X + Wraith Prism Fan BOX set is in town and Out For Delivery by FEDEX!  It will be in my grubby old hands today.  YEAS!

Oh I just noted my Gigabyte AMD socket AM4 X570 AORUS Elite Wifi motherboard is now saying that delivery is slated to be on June 10 (they are shipping on June 8).

32gb HyperX FURY 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (Kit of 2 16gb) Black is "On its way" via FEDEX.

Ordered the day before, a 2TB WD Blue 3D NAND SATA6 SSD is "On its way via USPS" due Monday.

2nd item from that order, a Armor All 2.5 gal Wet/Dry Vacuum is also "Out for delivery by FEDEX".

So I get two of the 5 highly anticipated items today.   Yawsuh!    Then two more Monday and Tuesday!

And then the last one on Wednesday!   So by this time next week, I should have some Vroom vroom on the desk.   Not the current "wheeze cough spit sputter rattle rattle rattle wheeze" the valiant old warhorse is giving me just to my right elbow.   Yes.  We ALL get old.  Even computers!

Got in from the Doctor visit today, had a small carton on the step at front door and a box in the mailbox.  So I got skin preps from pharmacy and a 2TB WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD.  Kewl!   The 32 gb DDR4 ram will get here tomorrow.  AND the seller of my motherboard cancelled my order, and Walmart.com still hasn't posted the two item order to the bank yet.   SO, with most of my goodies in hand, I now begin a focused search for a motherboard.  I really like the AMD X570 chipset specs!   Just finding one in stock anywhere has become a challenge!

Jherrith, would you know of some place might have some of these in house?

Hmm, J, could I have a peek at your system specs for Stormbringer?  Hard to believe you made that build FOUR years ago!  But you built a doozie, for sure.   My mouth is dry, I need to drool a bit. ;o)

Ok, I have spent several hours looking through every online store for IN STOCK motherboards of chipset and features I need and want to use.   The first choice was for a Gigabyte motherboard, but nobody actually lists any in stock that will work with this RYZEN 7 3700X AM4 cpu.   Wow, thats terrible, as therre are literally hundreds of Gigabyte motherboards in stock at ALL the online stores.   And this level of stuff is a year old now, should be lots sitting around, I'd think.  So, back at Walmart.com, I stopped searching for just Gigabyte, and voila!   There were a few that listed IN STOCK (Low Quantity).  I took a long hard look at each, and discovered that this Asus TUF GAMING-X570-PLUS (WI-FI) board had all  the features I wanted.  Built in WiFi, EIGHT SATA 6 ports, 4 dimm slots for max of 128gb, 2 m.2 thingies, PCIe 4 x16 plus smaller one, 12 various USB ports, some kind of built in video with HDMI out, allows dual video, and requires Win 10 Pro x64.    Was about $60 more than the Gigabyte board that vaporized on me.   Well ASUS is supposed to be good hardware too.   Lots of folks use em. Can it hurt much to try one?   I'd like to be using my new rig by 1 July, yaknow?   This one is scheduled to arrive June 11.
We'll see!  :)

cool!   I check the mail and find another packet, this time my Kingston HyperX DDR4 2.666 gHz.  2 x 16 gb DIMMS.   Never used more than 8 gb DDR2 PC800 DRAM before.  This should be a real treat.   An Octal core, 16 threads CPU with this ram.
color me Happy and Smiling today!

Jherrith's Work Entertainment thread woke me to the realization that in our modern world, there are a TON of peripherals that 'add on' to the system via cabling and WiFi too.   I smile now recalling my searching hard for numbers of USB ports and SATA ports while ignoring Serial and Parallel ports in my quest for the motherboard I am now waiting for.  The latter used to be so vital in the use of our PC's, now are transformed into the phenomenally versatile Universal Serial Bus port.  And WiFi!  All my computing devices are connected to my WiFi Color Laser printer and Epson X310 flatbed scanner.  Well its just a scanner now that the printhead is clogged with dried ink and I quit even trying to use the print function.   But seriously, our I/O has literally exploded in every direction!   Who'd have even dreamed of all this great stuff even just 20 years ago?
I think we may have dreamed of touch screens, or even holo screens.   Definitely fantasized about massively multi-core processing.  But never in our GPU's!   And we HAVE that now.   In the day Star Wars: A New Hope was made, ALL the special effects were done at Industrial Light And Magic.   They were using big old CRT's and Main Frame type render farms.   And it still took them 2 YEARS to complete all those scenes.   Today, hobbyists are creating even more elaborate FX scenes on their own desktops and 'mini render farms'!   At HOME!  In DAYS!   Flavor me impressed.
Let's Imagine a moment now.   In my (our!) lifetime, the Voyager Space Probes launched in 1977 along with Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope.  Think about where our technology was THEN!   Right.  As the available technology changes, our wants and needs change.  And for this old man, all for the better.  It's amazing, it's terrific, it's GREAT!  And I am having fun with all of it but for one little thing.  Waiting for the part to get here.
Sigh.  I reckon that bit never changes.   :sure:

LOL!     Might as well laugh about it, TL.   There is nothing I can actually do but wait and see it when it gets here.  Meanwhile, I am trying to do smaller simple renders to keep from burning up my poor little CPU.  I am pretty sure it just needs to have the heat sink pulled off, cleaned real good and fresh thermal paste applied.  What's on there is now 10 years + old!   It's really a miracle that the ol workhorse has held up so well for so long.   Gotta give Intel and Gigabyte their props for this one.
They've earned em!   :coffeemaker: :dancingknight: :o)

Hmmm.  No I am not gonna say even one thing that might make em think I don't care....
cause they will probably make me wait a month or two more!   :OMFG: :rainy: :cry2:

I'm to impatient to build my own.  I like building what I want online.  My latest HP, which I just hooked up a wee bit ago, was ordered that way.  I pick what I want and they install it....test the unit out, make adjustments....and it'a on it's way in no time.

The one it replaces is my 7 year old Walmart Special (HP) that I picked up when I thought my BigBoy was dying.  Fortunately, Big Boy is still alive and well and it's going on 12 years old with many updates I've made.  I like working on computers...not building them LOLOL....

As for the Walmart special....It's still going strong also.  Just a wee bit slower then the other two...but will work if something happens to either of the other ones.  I'll hook it up at every other month to keep everything updated....

To me, it isn't much different whether a complete new build, a rebuild-upgrade or just replacing old parts, rearranging the insides more to my liking.   Specially with THIS rig, TL.  I've been using this case now 15 years.   Everything inside it has been replaced a few times, specially in its early days.   But the "Main 3" in this one have been in it, and in use for a full 12 years now.   I need some newer faster hardware, a few more of this and that etc.!     And this new "Main 3" will definitely give  me that.   Main 3=Motherboard, CPU and system RAM.   The main items that have to go together.   To do this one in 2008, it ran me right at $900.  This one is right at $800.   Big surprise there.   I splurged on a new 2TB SSD and the shop vac.  Those two made it near $1100.   That's enough spending for one payday!  LOL!
I will clean up and buff up these old parts and re-use them.  Make another smaller box to use in the living room maybe, or kitchen.  Its fun having working boxes all over the place!  :o)

I spent years repairing friends computers and when they finally gave up with having to fix them....I'd take their computer and strip it down.  I've got a lot of ram cards that way that fit most HP and other Computers, plus hard drives, etc etc etc.  Got rid of a ton of stuff last year since most components aren't that bad in price anymore.

If you don't mind having moving parts, mechanical HD's are dirt cheap now.  Even the top drawer ones are cheap.   But with 3D NAND pushing prices down even more all around, I suspect the spinners days are numbered.   Better get em while the getting is good!
I see motherboards selling for over $1000 now.  DOH!  That's ridiculous!   I mean what do you really NEED to get top end performance?   Read the specs on the manufacturers sites, jot the numbers down, compare those specs.   I find that $300.00 boards can net every bit the performance of the flashy light show $1000.00 ones.   What erg of speed does a strip of LED's get you?   It don't!  LOL!  But even this mobo I ordered has connectors for some of those light strips.  Whoopee doo!  I like the light show right in front of me on screen.   I mean hey, that's what matters.
Oh I can see it now, PP 11.x, ZBrush 2020, PS CS4 Extended, all side by side and a few gigs of room to spare!   :D

They typically have to order in computer items.  They may say they are in stock....but not at their place.  Had that happen before.   My shipment would come from the manufacturer and not Walmart.  Kinda like Amazon does at times.
Title: Re: New Rig coming up!
Post by: McGrandpa on June 12, 2020, 12:58:18 AM
i hear you, TL!    Walmart, NewEgg, Amazon, TigerDirect.   They all appear to use the same suppliers.  Then too, Best Buy and lots of mom n pop computer shops use the same also.   Just that in 12 years time, some of those names have changed.  Amazon behaves different than I remember.  Have had an account with em for some 15 years now.   reading tells some stories;   SOME of the common type items they do have in stock, somewhere.   Walmart too.   But some items, like the RYZEN 7's and the top end motherboards that it takes to use that CPU, that comes from dedicated sellers.  Being as the main 3 computer stores all use those same sellers I can see what is stocked and where the cutoff is.
Well, I was the one that just had to have an octal core monstrosity, along with 16 threads.  That went above their cutoff, and was ordered in from their supplier.   I did also find a RYZEN 9, 12 cores, 24 threads!   Whew!  a Grand for the CPU and another Grand just for the motherboard to run the beast.   I am thinking WOW, i thought it was bad enough to drop $800 for a CPU, Motherboard and 32 gigs of RAM for this build.   The 12 years ago build was a bit over $900, and was pretty much the same thing.  "The Main Three!"  CPU, MOBO, RAM.   Oh, add a cheep case and 550W PSU.   Kinda evened em out I think.   Means the prices for this stuff did not maintain;  they dropped through the 12 years!   You won't find me complaining about that!  LOL!
 :woohoo: :coffeemaker:

TL, the walk in Walmart here has some of the really every-day kind of items.   They carry memory cards for cameras, USB flash drives in various sizes, keyboards n mice, audio headsets, web cams, some monitors, PHONES alongside a few boxed systems, laptops, tablets and bits n bobs for those things.  And a small selection of software.   GAMES!   I think 5 different consoles plus some for PC.   Lots of game cards for TIME for some games, or in-game trade/money.   some, you buy the game but have to take delivery through Steam.
Used to be able to buy HD's in the store.   If there are any there now, they are on clearance.   Then their warehouse has some other items stocked there.   Above that, have to order in.   Fast Food Carryout!  Ha!

OK, it's HERE now!  DHL turned it over to the USPS in Grand Prairie, and miracle of miracles, the post office sent me texts updating my package's whereabouts.   Then, at 10:25 am, I got the DELIVERED text.  Funny how just as the mail carrier set the carton down in front of my door, the text arrived saying it was delivered.   Wonder how they do that?  Anyway,   I made me slowly walk it to the kitchen area, get out a snap knife and open the carton.  Wow, it's even the right one!   it's the exact thing I ordered!   Yaaay!   Brand new ASUS motherboard box, still sealed.  *I* cut those seals.  HAR!  Man, it's cool looking.   I recall thinking the same thing about my current Gigabyte mobo, 12 years ago.   Well, I am getting everything together that I am going to need to do the disassembly/assembly of the old and new stuff.   I see this thing is supposed to light up too.   Whoopee do!  I just need it to work and run its butt off!  LOL!
Some interesting things too about this.  The BIOS can be updated with a thumb drive set up a special way, to BOOT to it, and it loads that way.  Will look at that bit later I am sure.   this motherboard will actually start and run BIOS without any CPU in the socket.   Wow.  Now that's new.  It has 4 DIMM slots, a couple PCIe slots, some small slot type connectors, maybe for M.2, and EIGHT SATA port connectors.  all pointing either UP or straight to the case front.   Easier access I think.  I have to think about the size and length of the old BFG 8800 GTX.  It just misses hitting the drive cage by an inch.  I will also be getting a modern nvidia card, but gotta take it slow.   Being a pensioner, money is tight!
The tiny GT 740 SC 2 gig single slot card works, but the fan shaft bearing is squealing.   Means replace the bearing or the whole card, to be reliable.

I want to take my time doing this build, it could well be my last one.   But who knows, right?  I always enjoyed the tinkering and playing around.   Discovering neat little things as I go.  If this new stuff runs and runs well together, it ought to be a serious humdinger!
I don't think its gonna be a mean a rig as J's Stormbringer.   But it should stomp all over everything I have now!  LOL!
as many as 13 or 14 USB ports, several TYPES of USB. That's gonna be different for me.  Then there are the 8 SATA 6 ports.  ALL of my SSD's and the Pioneer BD rewriter were supposed to be run on SATA 6.  But all my old rig has is SATA 3.  So I think there will be a major difference in reading and writing to the drives with SATA 6.
I hope the CPU fan and heat pipes fit with the cover on the case.   That thing is TALL!

Ryzen 7 3700X, the ASUS TuF Gaming X570 Plus (WiFi), 2 x 16gb DDR4 2666-CL16; 32 gigs HyperX FURY (division of Kingston).   Then, the 6 SATA SSD's, the SATA BD rewriter.

Seems this motherboard has some sort of video array built in.   I will definitely check that out!

Ah, FUN!  At last!

ALRIGHT!   Here we GO!   :#1: :coffeemaker: :woohoo:

Woohoo!   :coffeemaker: :woohoo: :dancingknight:

I am now the proud and happy (but a bit weirded out) owner of Windows 10 Pro "Full Retail" (64 and 32 bits).   Evidently, J got hit with this need 4 years ago when he built Stormbringer.

The motherboard and cpu makers, AMD and ASUS, insist on using ONLY Windows 10 Pro 64 bits for these two items:

AMD socket AM4 RYZEN 7 3700X

ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Plus (WiFi) (for AMD AM4).

Grrrrr!  I had hoped my beloved Windows 7 Pro x64 would be fine.  Nope, not EVEN close.

So I was in chat with an M$ helper a while ago, and he looked up all the same stuff I'd already found, plus he gave me additional info on WHY.   The W10 driver foundation framework is way different now.
Thats the official reason.    It seems to include all manner of nifty hardware that Win7 will never even see.
Ok ok I get all that, so WHICH or what license or key do I need to have w10 pro 64 bit FULL version, so a croaked mobo or cpu can still  be activated with this one I buy now?    He, in the chat window, opened a new page in Firefox (my M$ acct was opened already) with THE new version in my cart, ready to rumble.
All I had to do was click "buy now".   I did, got a flurry of email and numbers from the chat helper, and so NOW, *NOW*, I own Windows 10 Pro x64.   Yaaay?

I mean with all these years of my bitching, moaning and groaning about Win 10, and here I am voluntarily BUYING it.   :whatthe: :nopanic; :OMFG: :cry2: :sure:  :odd:

 :thissmall: :lostme:
Might as well laugh it off now, :tearlaugh: :(ROFLMAO:
and get to ENJOYING my new build! :heeheehee:

Which is the WHY  :ichz: to buy Win 10 Pro.

 :kitty: :overthefence:

Now, to just do a final check and backups to things, then shut ol George XXXVIII'th down, one final time, and do open case surgery on the poor old man.

Wish me the best y'all!   It starts at dark!

Right, and believe me, I have paid rapt attention to the LACK of complaints from your corner, J!

If you're ok with it on Stormbringer, then I am sure to enjoy using my new system with W10 Pro 64 on it too.   Thing is, I HAVE to use it, as AMD and ASUS insist on it, and only it.   Therefore, I now have it.

What would be needed to set up a naming thread for the newest PC in my world?

On the other hand, YOU might enjoy having me walk around on those jobs of yours, helping, DOING, and not afraid to take in new information, and USE it.   Over 30 years experience in the electrical field, and I never got tired of learning new stuff!   Means, for me, what YOU do sounds fascinating!

As for learning new things I always seem to get hooked up with folks that are there for a paycheck only, and either don't want to learn or are not interested.

Thanks for the thread!

Its pretty sad you wind up with people that are so disinterested in the work.   Specially since the work itself NEEDS interested, alert and intelligent people DOING it!   You would never have gotten your degree, your license, none of it by being 'disinterested'.

Title: Re: New Rig coming up!
Post by: Jherrith on June 16, 2020, 08:58:52 PM
That is most certainly true, apparently those who pay attention and desire to learn more about their work are a dying breed.

Case in point would be the senior bench tech he has probably forgotten more then I will ever know as he has been in radio for over 25+ years.
Title: Re: New Rig coming up!
Post by: McGrandpa on June 16, 2020, 09:09:59 PM
Dying breed, indeed!    I wonder though, since I still bump into the rare person now and then that are like that.   Know way more than I do, even about the things I am intensely interested in.   Like you and electrical stuff.   I know where my 'cutoff' was, and I hate that exists.   You showed me what you not only filled that gap but branched off into a new direction.   One that I also like.   Since I do have this 'gray area' where it concerns communications, as in Radio, I should study that.   WiFi and BluTooth belong in that, and all cabled computer communications too!
I see my built in WiFi (new mobo) covers a greater variety of protocols than I currently have in any other hardware.  And it also does BluTooth 5.   Sounds interesting.   800' range.   On MY PC!  SOON!  LOL!

I am NOT an "ET", or Electronics Technician.   Not by any means.   But my exposure TO electronics got me pretty much dunked in RADAR technical stuff.   That was the real honest beginnings to my electrical knowledge.  And it had nothing whatever to do with voice comms.   That I was a Radarman, which designator became Operations Specialist about the time I was getting out of the military, ensured I knew and understood many elements OF Electronics.   It did not make me an Electronics Technician at all.   Just a dabbler for a bit, that's what.   It definitely steeped my interest in the field though.  Especially when simpler semi-conductors suddenly got crammed into flat packs called Dual Inline Pin Large Scale Integration/Integrated Circuits.   Or, in lay term, CHIPS!   Oh but my oh my, something entirely new was sprung up right before my eyes!   DIGITAL Electronics!   Man oh man was THAT ever the cats meow!   SO I bought up every book I could find on it.  And I learned heaps.   I built my own digital lab with various potentiometers, speaker, meter movements, 24V transformer with full 4 diode rectification and serious cleanup with big electrolytic capacitors and final noise filtering with ceramic caps and grounded chokes, then stepped down to dual 12VDC, +9VDC, dual +/- 5VDC at 5 to 6 amps.  FUSED.   All connected to good old Rat Shack socket bread boards, 3 of the big ones side by side, then one vertically that was solder wired to all those pots and speakers and power.   Then I cut and stripped a horde of jumper wires for it, collected hundreds of chips, discrete components.   In a tall 40 drawer bin box.   My own self education course!   On the job, at Proler Int. I was building an enunciator panel for the 4,800 hp 2300 v 9 phase AC motor driving the Hammer Mill shaft.   That was fun!   In the end, they had to have 12 sets of 4-3pole contactors set up to engage sequentially and using lockout contacts to force waiting on predecessor contactor + RPM setpoint contact for each subsequent engage.  We actually got that cut in half, used 6 sets or stages for the automatic sequential startup of that giant motor.   And it worked first attempt.   It's SUPPOSED to do that!  LOL!   That monster started up slow, as the motor was direct coupled to the hammer rotor shaft.  That thing was a solid steel roll 4' diameter, with the hammers on 4" hinge pins of hardened steel.   1 revolution, CLANG..CLANG CLANG...then steady clanging, then silence as the whirring began, the hammers swung out and stayed by centrifugal force.   Then the "operator Green Light" lit as full RPM threw the last centrifugal RPM contact.   And Ralph turned the car conveyor on, and some kinda metallic brown car became little chunks of steel and separated odd materials at the other end of ye olde Prolerizer.    At the time it was the largest operating Hammer Mill in the world.   Several other method have been invented since then, but at the time, that was the poster boy thing.
darn spell chucker sure don't like electronics terminology!
McG.

Breakout plate installed, is an exact fit, as expected.  Perfect fit.  The motherboard is mounted.  As ATX form factor, it has 9 screw holes with 'head pads'.  I used all new screws, test fitted all first then used the red paper washers on all 9.  Also a perfect fit, snugged all, great fits.
CPU goes in only one way, naturally.  Opened socket lock arm, set the AMD AM4 RYZEN 7 3700X CPU over the open socket, let it go.  Plop!  right in it went.  Took it out, tried that again, Plop!  Right in it went!  I'm smiling at that still.  Put the 2 DIMMS in their designated slots per booklet instructions.  Clicked right in, locks popped into place, nice.
It tickles me that the manufacturers maintain precision form factor dimensions so well.  Even with 15 years between make of case and motherboard!

I'm presuming you already did the properties and updated drivers thing....
If tis wireless, fresh batteries, preferably new. I have a Logitech wireless that likes to do double clicks on single and the occasional page jump instead of the usual 10 lines, when the battery gets too low. On the one hand, a nuisance, on the other good indicator to replace the batt,

Wizzard, you just reminded me of something.   I did put the ASUS dvd in and ran it right after W10 gave me the desktop.  I think all the drivers were installed by the ASUS software and W10.   Looking in the device manager shows ALL OK.   The mouse is the regular old style Microsoft Intellimouse Optical.  Two buttons and a scroll wheel button.  USB, corded.   Have used these for over 20 years and love em.  Last time I bought one, I got 6 from NewEgg.   Still got 3 or 4 unopened cartons, and two in use.   One just got erratic so I stuck it in the bottom "old mice" drawer.
Tried the other mouse too, a new one.  Same thing.  Will scout up another driver from somewhere.   M$ installed its own with W10 install.   It even works while in the BIOS!
I took pics of the underside; it is a Microsoft Basic USB Optical Mouse v 2.0 model 1113So I found actual drivers FOR this mouse at Microsoft Downloads.  It helped, better than the default installation driver.   Thanks for the prod in the right direction, Wiz!

Man how things have changed through the decades I've been into this stuff.

I'd imaging y'all, like me, hate messy cabling.   I got me a job to do.   SIX SATA6 SSD's are all plugged up and recognized by the system.  but man what a  mess!   M.2 would give me a neat way to put two drives in, but I like the ease of adding and removing these devices.   Means I have to work out a way to deal with all these spaghetti cables!

Mc-G, is there a sliding door\panel on the front? on the floortop, there's a slide that hides the usb and other connections. usually you'll find most on the back panel.So... the external drives, camera, other stuff you connect and leave on, you connect in the back. THumbdrives, temporary stuff, connect in front so it's easy to disc.

Yep,  this is an older than that sort of case.  Heh!   IT does have the connectors and wiring for front audio (and I use USB headset!) and two USB ports.  The USB's are plugged into a dual USB 2.0 connector on the motherboard.  The only other USB 2.0 connector I see anywhere is right next to the other USB 2.0 connector.   All the other USB connections (and there's a bunch of em!) are USB 3.2 5GB and USB 3.2 10GB.  6 total, and one odd brand new type that's rounded on the ends and small.  um like a bigger phone connector.
The older devices need to be connected to the USB 2.0, as they don't behave so well on the new types.  The MS Basic Optical Mouse is one of those.  It now behaves perfectly on the USB 2.0 port.  No more mouse bounce!
I got reading to do on "USB" schemes it seems.   otherwise, I might just have 7 useless USB 3+ ports on this beastie!

USB 3.2 gen 1 and gen 2 can be used only for data storage.   Flash drives, USB flash drive in phone, USB external 2.5" hd.   Nothing about powering things.   That must be left to the old USB 2.0 ports then.
Title: Re: New Rig coming up!
Post by: McGrandpa on June 21, 2020, 08:09:14 PM
Ah HA!   On this mobo, the USB 3.2 ports are for 5gb and 10gb per second data transfer only.   So that leaves FOUR USB 2.0 ports for slow data AND power.  Like phone charging.   I did see speed improvement with the USB SATA drive dock on the 3.2 port.   But with all 6 SSD's tucked nicely inside the case, I have disconnected that goodie and wound its cables up for another time.

That Gigabyte GA8-P45-DS3L Intel socket 778 mobo was an excellent buy for a  bit over $100.00 over a decade ago.   But THIS one, oh man!   A good acquaintance told me  with a crooked grin "its really not fair to compare 4 cores to 8 cores" and yeah I know that.  But the rest of the stuff, already ON the motherboard, kinda make up for the lacking of a couple of USB ports.   I will rearrange things so to free up two of those USB 2.0 ports to break out the rear of the case.

a 4 cylinder VW engine is like the Intel Core Quadcore 9550.   4 cores on die, no hyperthreading.   It did pretty good for a long time.   Last two years, its begun overheating just doing regular stuff.   Rendering was very limited.  Now, I render a loaded scene and the CPU barely breathes!   Loving that :D

Running BadMoonRYZEN's first major render.   PP 11.3, near max settings in Auto, FireFly.   A 5000 x 3000 pixel render.   Started at 11:34.
I wonder, is Jherrith's AMD ThreadRipper CPU a badder one than the RYZEN 7's?
Oops!  Stormbringer has a AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core CPU!  Um, I think that it's a bit faster in the basics than the RYZEN 7 3700X.  Mostly they seem to rate about the same.   That is saying a lot for the socket AM3 FX-8350 next to the 3 year newer socket AM4.

Ok, I admit it now.   I've been just a big wuss over the Win 10 thing.   After spending a few days piddling around in it, getting my fave software installed in it, I find it's not so hard to get along with.   It has a few quirks I'm not thrilled about but it also has some I actually like.   And the ones I'm not happy with I can still do something about.   Just takes a little time.  And I haven't had to do a TL and  :whack: it into submission yet!  LOL!

Found the software to control the CPU Fan LED's through the USB port.   Kinda cool!   The ring can chase its tail around, the logo and Fan can change colors, bounce, and some other stuff.  When I get tired of doing this I will hook the USB 2.0 ports up to the rear plate.  :)

Ah!  BadMoonRYZEN's uptime is over 4 days now.   It auto adjusts CPU clock to need, and generally hovers on 3.56 gHz.   CPU diode reports 110°F average.   CPU Temp reports 95-105°F.  It runs way cooler than the old Intel CPU was.   Both have stock air coolers too.   This one is a heat pipe cooler, fitted to work on the CPU die with steel 'straps' catching heavy hooks in a major thick frame bolted to the motherboard.  The socket and frame spread out the load over like 16 square inches, so the pressure on the CPU doesn't push it down thru the main board.  This is the AMD Socket AM4.  And, seems AMD has an ever badder azz socket and cooling mount for the baddest CPU's in their arsenal.  Those boards run over $1,000 a pop as do the CPU's!   I knew I wouldn't need something like that to have fun with.   And considering this rig is over 4 times more powerful than ol George was, and 4 times the RAM, etc.  I did well.
Pardon me while I become all smugly self satisfied for a moment or two!    :woohoo: :coffeemaker: Gaming?   How about over 300 FPS in full screen Half-Life 2 Deathmatch!  And in Defiance, full screen over 270 FPS!   And the original Far Cry 64 over 350 FPS.   And no matter that this HAS improved my game, I am still Not Good!   LOL!  Just once in a blue moon I feel especially spry and win *A* map.  The next couple hundred I do good to finish in mid pack!
But man am I having FUN getting to use my system and not worry about its health now.  THAT is simply GRAND!

Y'all KNEW I was gonna have to do it.   I wouldn't be me if I didn't get down and nail to the penny what I spent on building BadMoonRYZEN.   So, while sorting little programs and the Start menu...I did.  Found the Calculator in W10!  Ha!

JUST for general information, this "upgrade" cost me a total of $1,324.20.   That is a new 2.5 gallon shop vac, 32 gigs of DDR4 RAM, an ASUS TUF Gaming X570 PLUS (WiFi) motherboard, an AMD AM4 RYZEN 7 3700X CPU with Wraith Prism cooler, a Full Retail Windows 10 PRO 64 bits and the 2 TB WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD.   Yeah that was actually over my impromptu off the seat of my pants guesstimated 'budget' I sorta set in my head when I made the snap decision to actually go for it and DO this build.  And, it was generally done as a birthday present to my own Self.   Like the lady sez in the commercial:  "I'm worth it!"There were about $300 worth of items that were not needed just to build the computer.  But, niceties like the 2TB SSD, the wet-dry Shop Vac, a couple of dinners carry-out.  The little things, that help make a day sweeter, yaknow?  :)

LOL....Glad you had fun with this one Mc-G.   I still enjoy the "BUILD" by others.  I tell them what I want...they put it in...if it doesn't work, they are responsible...not me....they fix it....not me....and it costs THEM money...and not me LOLOL.....

Question.  when you go into your update and security tab.....does it tell you about Windows, Version 2004 is on it's way.  So far my Laptap and the Big Boy in the computer room have been updated.  My new computer in the Bedroom still says "Once it's ready for your device, you'll see the update available on this page"

So I guess there are different versions of the update depending on which windows version you are using.

The Laptop is working well with the new update...but Big Boy is trying to spit it out...I finally got frustrated and walked away.  I'll work on it more later in the week.  Keep in mind the Big Boy is 10 years old.....

Settings > System > About = Windows 10 Pro version 2004 installed on 6-17-2020.  I have the latest build.   I was told by a IT Pro that buying my 10 Pro in mid June means I'd get the 2004, latest one.  He was right, it seems.  :)
It's weird man, I am not having any real problems with it either.   So far!   :D
Update says it last checked at 0240 this  morning, and I am up to date.   Cool!   Also, all updates are installed, none are pending.

Yup...that's what I do.....as long as I have a Registration or S/N for it....it gets used.  Loading up all the programs on my FAComp (New Computer...well, new in 2018 but just started using it this year...It's been shelved since I got it)  didn't go bad at all.  A few I had to fight with and won...those that didn't win got canned once I found replacements or updated FREE versions of them..

Yaknow, it's funny how ya buy a tablet machine with Win10 preinstalled on it, and ya fight with it constantly to do what YOU want to do and can't.   Then, you do a build and buy Win10 and install it fresh and new on a new empty drive, and you just breeze along doing everything you want to, the way you want to.   So, now I realize that the problems with those other machines is the system builder has restrictions imposed on their OS because they either didn't have to pay for it or paid very very little for it.   But, it's built into these little 2n1 tablets.   Maybe the real issue is their size in the first place.   Anyway, ya sure can't do much with those things.   Email.  Browse.  Calculator.   Tiny Town Tinker Toy.  Blah!

I have a Amazon Fire Tablet and knock on wood....nothing has given me any problems at all.  When I was in the Hospital I had it with me and watched TV shows on it since the hospital channel choices were standard channels.   Plus all of the MS games installed played well.

But yes, The Grandson had a Tablet that used Windows and it was nothing but a PITA for him.  It didn't last long.  Not because it didn't work well...but when it landed it kinda broke into pieces....He never got a tablet again....Now he has HUGE cell phones LOLOL

I picked up an Android tablet to take to the hospital with me for the big C op.  19 days, it really was a help to have some THING to do.  I determined I did not care at all for 'Droid in the LEAST.   Not enough to it to be useful!   But, it and my little phone at the time got me by.   I don't even count that tablet!   Its going to one of the daughters soon, she wants it cause it IS Android.   And I thought she was a lot smarter than that!   The 12" EVOO W10 tablet is the best of the lot.  And it even allows programs from anywhere.   But some "features" are locked on or off, because its a mfgr install of W10, not a full retail version.   ok.I grant ya, the full retail one is way WAY better, no comparison really.    But that EVOO tablet is actually a little bit useful.   I will keep that one and lose the others I guess.   But i keep the Surface.   That display is amazing.
My phone is almost a 6" display too!   LOL!

AWRIGHTY!   Today is Sunday, July 5th, 2020.   Had a great nights sleep after all the badda-booms were done just after 1am.   I wasn't worried about fires for the first time since I moved up here, 9 years ago.  It had rained big time, thunderstormed with hail for some 20 minutes.  Hour later a soft gentle rain set in for a few hours.  Soaked the place pretty good. This morning I get up, check the mail box, no packet.   Go back in, fix some breakfast.  And as soon as I take my first spoonful I get the email, package DELIVERED!  At 9:29 am SUNDAY!   Yay FedEX!  LOL!I leave my bowl of Sketty-O's n Meatballs and slip outside again.  Mailbox empty.  Hm.  Checked sis's porch, ah-HA!  There it is.   Fetch it, get to kitchen, open it, Voila!   Even have the same exact numbers the installed 32 gb RAM does. After shutting it down, unplugging power, installing and reinstalling all 4 DIMMS a few times I finally figured out the little 'how to get it right!'.   Slip it in bottom leading a little bit, press till it clicks, then press the bottom end till it rocks into place.   Start it up, I get the POST Logo screen, go into BIOS, read all the info, and see it cleared 64 gb DDR4 system RAM fine.   Reboot, go to winders, and here I be.Next item will likely be a new video card.  :)
Imagine that, ME having a rig with 64 gb RAM!   BadMoonRYZEN, you lucky dawg you!

Hmm.   BadMoonRYZEN has a tummy ache.  Or something.   Seems the old BFG 8800 GTX OC 768 meg needs better fan control.   But that doesn't look to be available in W10.   My video card is now my weak link.

I did.  The Nvidia System Tools has to be installed separate, after the driver set.   I'd forgotten that too.  So, installed that, used that.   Better now!   But I probably will get more better use from a newer graphics card anyway.   Some payday soon I think.   They are cheap enough now :)
IT is surprising to me, and in a happy way, how much old software and utilities will install and work perfectly in W10.  Seems the Retail is generally better than the pre-installed freebie version, though it really should be the same.  Maybe its just that this machine has a lot more breathing room.   Now there's a thought!  :)

UH oh!   8:30 pm last night, I get this ding-a-ling notification and finally figure out what its about.  It's WINDOWS cumulative MASSIVE Update requiring a shut-down-restart.   Sooo...I make the BadMoonRYZEN funeral arrangements, get out the Win10 Pro DVD, and go to POWER in the menu and it says now "Update then Shutdown?"  Gee M$ can ya get more cheezy with the notifications or what?!  I Shut Down.   Its updates do go quicker on THIS system, SATA 6gb per seconds...wonder if that is giga BYTES or giga BITS??  It gets to 30% and stops, said SHUTTING DOWN...and, it went lights OFF inside.   It usually only does that when I reach behind and toggle the power switch on the PSU.  Then, it restarted, on its own.  I get the ASUS logo screen (TUF GAMING eagle!), the installing updates message (of course), and the % sign starts up at 30, waits a second, then whizzes through the remaining 70%.  And its UP!   And done till next time I guess.
How anti-climatic.   I LOVE that part!   :yippee:

Replace it for an rtx card. That gtx is damn near 10 years old now. Teck is way different. Modern software couldn't card an iota about how great the past card was. All new software is tuned to run raytracing rtx.

I can't afford RTX, it will be something better than this or the crappy little GT740 SC 2gig card which fan popped on.  Maybe a 1050 or 1060.  Something $200 or lower.   Cause I aim to have it in sometime in August!Yeah the 8800GTX always got hot, sometimes just shut off on me.  I got an even older 7800GTX I can stick in, in a pinch.   That one IS 11 years old now.
I am doing REAL good to get up to speed this fast, PDG.   Fixed income being what it is and all.

You are not the only one on a fixed income on this forum my friend. The video card will be your bottleneck. I'm stashing cash for a new machine myself. This Dell is almost 10 years old now and is the last machine here that still runs.

RPis not included. I have a 10 inch touchscreen tablet I made from a Pi. That's my mobile machine. I just swap micro SD cards to run Linux, Android, whatever OS I need. Worth about $100 all in. Someone mugs me for it; have a nice day. I'm on old guy that walks with canes. Prime target for miscreants. Never render a Poser scene with it but I do run and older version of Blender on it.

PDG, we just got a bonus I was not expecting at all.  That 'Covid 19 Economic Stimulus' the Gov't paid us.  I spent that plus a good bit of regular income, and got this machine plus W10Pro running.   I did have to scrimp and cut some corners sure.  But, I was careful not to cut into the critical core components.  I did splurge man, I bought an extra 2 TB SSD and the extra 32 gigs DDR4 Ram.   Those two would have paid for a NICE new video card for sure.   However, the Main 3 have been established and are working better than expected.  Especially with W10Pro running it all.  So, I knew I'd have that bottleneck in graphics performance.  That said, it still WORKS great running the games.  And does better with the 3D stuff than I anticipated.   Seems those upgraded programs are more forgiving to the aged Warrior than expected!
He DOES get tired and stumble occasionally though!   ;)

As to that bottleneck;   by end of next week, I should have a new graphics card in.   An ASUS GeForce GTX 1650 4GB Edition HDMI DP DVI Gaming Graphics Card.   Tax, Title & License, under $200.00  THIS ONE HERE (https://www.newegg.com/asus-geforce-gtx-1650-super-tuf-gtx1650s-o4g-gaming/p/N82E16814126358?Item=N82E16814126358)

I see by the popularity of the style of KEYBOARD that I am not the only person who likes the LOW Profile sculpted keys USB corded keyboard too!  It's way past time that people asserted their will by not using their wallet on things they do not like.  Heh!
Now, except for the little nickle and dime accessories, I should be about done with this upgrade!  Whew!

The current crop of modern cordless items do real well on batteries, which have also improved a lot.  They tend to last a good deal longer.   So I have a cordless keyboard I got for the laptop.  Uses a tiny little USB plug as its radio.   Works so well I use it wherever I like.   Only bad thing is it is more sensitive to touch than my fingers are.   But, I work at it, its still nice to use.  Mice all have USB tails.  ;o)

At 1:40 pm it's HERE!   Brand spanking new, with the protective clear plastic sheets stuck all over it, port dust plugs in!  And it's bigger than the BFG 8800GTX OC 768 meg card!  Not as long, but taller and way thicker, with two BIG cooling fans on it, heat pipes etc.   It outputs to DVI-D, HDMI and Display Port.  I do have an HDMI cord with a HDMI to DVI adapter, whew!  got that for the laptop.  Got the latest Nvidia driver set for it, half a gigs worth, ready to install.  Now to shut er down and do it to it!   :woohoo: :coffeemaker:   :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :winks:

Woohoo!  it's IN!  Inside BadMoonRYZEN that is!  I'm so happy now!   Looking really good on both screens.   The old warhorse, the BFG 8800 GTX OC 768 card is in the parts drawer pulling standby-backup duty now.  This one runs Steam - Defiance and Half Life 2 Deathmatch way faster and a LOT cooler.   Get this, about 100°F cooler!  No kidding!  It won't let me control the fans, that's automatic.  It has two BIG fans on it and nice looking arrangement of contact plates and heat pipes.  It's quiet too!   So far there isn't a lot I can do via the Nvidia control panel.  Will install the ASUS TUF GAMING one and see how that does. But, Brown delivered and I am one happy old man now  :happydance:  :yippee: :yippee:   :foru:

Ok the new vid card IS faster, but even more impressive to me is that it also is cooler.   A LOT cooler. It runs the Steam games, my Shooters, at 90 to 101 F.  That's 100 degrees cooler than the 8800 GTX!That alone is worth buying it.

@ PDG - I can't find the thread or post where you'd mentioned that my bottleneck in this new rig is the old video card.  I agreed with you, actually.   And did buy another graphics card.   My big deal is always get the most bang for the buck.  And, the number of them bucks were limited.   I got by under $200 on this one.  It's a 'ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER Overclocked 4GB Edition' (that's the model name!).  It matches the motherboard.   An 'ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) ATX' mobo.
So, hopefully the bottleneck is cured.  :)Can't afford an RTX based card.  But, this one will do nicely, for a good while I think.

BadMoonRYZEN . . .
Gosh I am so proud of this machine!   I wanna just brag about it for a while, but I also know that folks generally dread it when others do that.   So, I have built it, it's working great, and I am even mostly happy with how Win 10 Pro 64 is doing.
With the new video card I have not had even one of those "display driver crashes" happen.  No bank screens and restart of 3D driver, none of that.   It's DONE now.  Time to USE it!
  -
So, the Ol Warhorse, the BFG 8800 GTX OC 768 meg PCIe card is now stashed in the Parts Drawer for standby duty.   It and Win10 don't really get on well as Win10 expects more from it than it was ever built to give.   But Heaven knows it TRIED!
I think it was the first add-in gamer graphics card for desktop PC's that topped the $1,000.00 mark when it was released.  I saw the specs, I saw the benchmarks, the screencaps, the videos and I drooled folks, I sure did!   So, when I saw this one at NewEgg on clearance sale, I thought "Why not?  It's less than $300 now!"  as it was something like ten years later.   So I hit the "BUY" button, and in minutes, it was on the way to me.   NewEgg has always shipped with care to prevent damage to the manufacturers packaging.   It came sealed in its own box, inside a big cardboard box with air bag shock insulation all around it.  Just like this new ASUS TUF Gaming card did.   It's some five or six years after the 8800GTX  now, and I finally got enough newer hardware and software to put a hurting on that one.  Now, THAT is saying something!   Even with its deficiencies, it still ran all my games and 3D software with great framerates and speed.   In this, I cannot ignore the old Intel Core Quadcore Q9550, 4 cores and no hyperthreading.   Over 12 years of heavy use, it ran sometimes for months on end.   It, the Gigabyte mobo and the 8 gigs of DDR2 Ram survived a few blown power supply units, broken CPU cooler mounts and my clumsiness.   So, they are together in being called Venerable Old Workhorse parts.  It doesn't hurt that they are actually still usable!    So, I am not burying them.  Just putting them to bed for a well earned rest!

The new video card has ONE little thing about it that bugs me.  There is a DIODE, soldered to the printed circuit board, that is clearly part of the power circuit.  That doesn't bother me at all.   They ALL have diodes transistors, SiPs and DiPs, tripod cans, resistors, capacitors on the boards.  Always have.  What ya don't see every  day is when one of those small power diodes is also an exposed LIGHT emitting diode. And this one emits a bright white light continuously!   Yes folks I leave the side off so I can enjoy the light show.   And tinker.  But this one light is a bother!  So where did I put that roll of electrical tape ... grrr!

Hate to be Debbie Downer but put the damn side back on the case! Ignoring the fact that the chance of unwanted crap getting into your innards goes through the roof with the side off; all modern cases control the in and out airflow over the CPU block and RAM. Look at your temps and then put the side back on and watch them fall. You are shortening the life of your investment. That's why the case side is translucent/transparent. To look at the pretty lights and in the case of the last machine that dies around here; the pretty florescent coolant flowing around inside.

This case is around 15 yrs old, it has one itty bitty 3" fan in the side I just put on.  Not Plexiglas nor lexite, it's just a sheet of aluminum painted and gussied up a bit.  I do have other sides I can put on.   And one of them IS Lexite, with 3 fans.  The temps of both the CPU and GPU were and still are 90F to 110F, nearly all the time.   Even gaming and rendering, the GPU gets all the way up to 129F.    I really liked old Everest by Lavalys.  They got bought up by AIDA, which puts out AIDA 64.   I slid the $30 upgrade fee their way and now it sees all these brand new sensors like I want it to.   I'm an old lugnut long before I became a sparkplug, PDG.   And I am smiling pleasantly as I say I need to know what my machinery is doing, no if's and's or but's about it!The cover might not be as pretty as the CPU fan lights or the motherboard lights, but it will help keep both my cats tails full length.
I been keeping it between the desk and dresser, for the last 9 years about.
It's ON, now.   :woohoo: :coffeemaker:

the LED is still covered up!     :coffeemaker: I make note of a 5 to 15 degree increase in both CPU and GPU temps  since putting the side back on.   However, since they died years and years ago, I'd removed the front and rear 120mm case fans.  Haven't replaced them yet!

This new video card is surprisingly robust.   I mean I see all kinds of hooplah over the geForce RTX cards.  But they are pretty penny stuff, a bit out of my reach.   I searched a few days and read all the specs, and am surprised these nearly one year released newer GeForce GTX 1650 series cards don't get better press than they do.   The 1660 GTX is actually much better, almost up there with the low end RTX's.   All the games and software I use barely make this card breathe hard.   Even all running together.
It is thicker and a lot taller than my venerable OLD BFG 8800GTX OC 768 card, and almost three inches shorter.  It is designed to fit an ATX mini case.  I use an ATX mid tower case.  And now all those drive bays are mostly empty!   6 SSD's just piled up at the bottom of the drive cage with the Pioneer BD drive at the very top makes the machine look empty.   Cool!  LOL!  That new video card is sitting on 101F right now, where the 8800GTX would be at 150-160F.   IDLE.   So the new card is an excellent little investment at only $188.00!

OK, that bottle of brandy is empty now, and I wonder how long it will take for me to forget just how potent that stuff is and buy another one!  LOL!
BadMoonRYZEN still needs some drivers and software installed.  I figure it will be a while yet before I get all of it rounded up and done.  WACOM drivers for my pen tablets are next :o)

The new rig, BadMoonRYZEN, is up and at em.   21 days Up Time since last shut down.   Reboots seem not to count against that with this system as the CPU and mobo stay "hot".  Power Off's count, of course.Win10Pro is doing ok except for the blasted forced UPDATES.   I Hate that!  Firefox is trying that now too, and I hate that worse.   I went back to v. 68.0 and deleted ALL the updater stuff in the folder so it can't just DO it cause it wants to.   I am not laughing nor even smiling about this.   It is a dead serious problem, and if not fixable then either IE or Opera.Meanwhile all the software seems to work fine.  CPU  Clock is auto set in BIOS to 4050 mHz now.  Fans are temp controlled on auto.   I have ability to adjust manually if i wanted to.   So, all is well with my BadMoonRYZEN!  :woohoo:

It don't obey that.   I keep that off.  What does seem to keep it from doing it is deleting all the files needed TO autoupdate.  There are 6 I [SHIFT] [DEL] 'd !!!  It still popups damn update notices though.  Filthy GOOGLE might well have taken Mozilla.org over !!!!!

UH oh!  I just noticed this thread is in the Computer Help>Windows 7 section!   No Win 7 now, its still on the 480g SSD I used to boot from.   And its inside this box, doing nothing at all.   I do have the old mobo-ram-cpu in the original mobo box it came in 12 years ago.   Ought to put together a small rig to use in the living room I guess.    (shrugs) something! BadMoonRYZEN!(he he he he he he!)

Wow.  We've made it to mid January now.  SO far so good.  Been trying for a MONTH now to get shed of AT&T and move over to T-Mobile.  THAT isn't working. They refuse to let my phone and number go!   I am sick of their silently changing up their rules about the plans in situ.  I had to buy a new phone and Voila!  I get slammed with new stuff.  No Hotspot!  Had to go to a higher priced plan to get t hotspot.  With a tiny 10 gig cap in it.  So I get severely limited UNLIMITED data.  Piss ants.   Their slow-down data speed is unusable on the interwebs at under 100kbps.  Crap.  That is less than 2g.   So,  I talk with T-Mobile, get their Magenta 55+ Unlimited post-paid plan for less money and 3G slow down, bring my own phone.  I took it.
And so AT&frickinT won't unlock my phone!  Bastiges!  GAAAAAAHHHHHH!

I am back with T-Mobile now, new number and newer phone.   Stopped in one of the many T-Mobile boutiques on the way home from VA Med Center visit in early January.   Found the staff very helpful, not at all pushy and happy to show me whatever I was interested in.   Finally I mention a price and request for stylus.  They got me to the LG Stylo 6, a very fast octal core Android 10 phone with a stylus tucked right in.   I walked out with a paid off new phone, activated with the new number and I am enjoying it.
And I still have an active AT&T phone and number till Valentines day....when I won't make a payment and that prepaid thing goes off.

Yep, I can watch shows of all kinds now.  On all my devices.  Even the old Windows dumb phones that are not on a carrier.   But why would I?   I have 5 windows phones, 1 spare android 10 6.7" smartphone, 3 tablets, a BadMoonRYZEN desktop with 32" and 24" monitors, the 32" VIZIO Smart TV.   Whew yeah I might never watch a broadcast channel as long as I have the interwebs!  LOL!   Ah, and THEN I can wander out of my bedroom into the living room, and there is the 40" Sceptre non-smart TV that does have 3 HDMI inputs and a few others.   But it shows only what is sent to it via the ports.   Incredible picture though.  Yeah maybe I can find a way to cast TO that TV from the VIZIO.   Will work on that one.  :D

I have a remote I purchased that does that Mc-G.  It's a GE Remote that turns on all of the VCR's, TV's, DVD Players, etc.  Take a while to program it....and I hate to say this...but I don't use it often....but it does work...if you remember the proper combinations LOLOLOL

Yeah.  I got 4 remotes for the entertainment stuff in my bedroom, and seems they all do some things for at least one other electronic item.  Oh now I got another one, the TVision "roku" kind of thing.  Yep and it too does some things with other devices.   But not a one of them does it all for all the devices.  I have about got it figured out which does what to who.  And the DISH Joey remote does the least for all. But at least it doesn't interfere with my watching all the OTHER Tv and streaming movie stuff.   Pluto has some of the Discovery and Science channel shows.  I like that.  SO I wouldn't  cry if I lost access to DISH.  :)

SO.  I got TMobile's High Speed Home Internet now.  When it works well, it WORKS GREAT!  When it has problems, it sucks.  About like anything eh?   It also came with their version of a ROKKU free, on the house.   Those are kinda like a InterWeb TV tuner.  Like Vizio's WatchFree thing built into their TV's.  So I got an extra set of channels to watch.  Way cool!  And the internet coming in over their 5G is over 100 megabits.  WHEN its working right.  Their engineers are working on it right now, and it is improving more every day.   I think I'll  keep it!   I mean hey, got InterWebs and also free streaming TV shows and movies!  Plus I can DL those 1.6 gig Poser updates in a couple three minutes, not hours.  Niiiiice :D

Man I am so amazed by just HOW MUCH is out there for FREE!   I am totally convinced if I looked around enough, I'd even find those Science and Discovery channel programs I like so much.   I got the TV's own streaming tuner, and TMobile's streaming tuner.  Similar but different programming and even many of the same apps.  I am just swamped with choices!  Yeah, if my Sis and BiL gave up DISH I wouldn't really miss it.   I WOULD miss having my VUDU because of my more than 150 movies I OWN on it I can stream 24/7.   And can add more to that library anytime I get new movies.  As it is, I got VUDU on my BluRay player, the Vizio TV and the TMobile dongle.   AND YouTube, NetFlix and all the other popular apps plus a zillion not so well known that still have great programming.   Whew!    :woohoo:

Only thing about some of them 'channels' is they wanna make you log in.  Means creating another damn account where there ought be none.   Oh OR log in using yer FB or M$ accounts.  NOPE.    I have run into ONE of them that once ya land on their channel (app), you cannot get out  unless you DO log in.  There is no cancel action for them.   So I just went and found my way to settings and uninstalled them.  Now I don't even see em!  Yaaay!   Peacock, that would be what is/was NBC right?   I will check it out!   With ONLY 156 movies and 3 complete TV series with VUDU I need more variety!  Ha ha ha!

Gee whiz man!  Everyone wants a 10 chr + password now.   Oh no ya don't.  Gotta have numbers and caps in it too!  Then got hit with 'invalid password' on first login cause I went bloobey de bloop blop on the keyboard like a Liberache and made a 21 chr password that TOOK when I created the account.    So I reset it and carefully typed in a stoopid azz TEN chr pass with carefully placed caps and numbers.   Them dodo's gotta know we are going to have to hunt n peck whatever it IS on the on screen 'keyboard'.   Ok I won't start cussing again.   Grrr!   Account is created though and ONE Android phone is added too.  Now I got the TV, the BluRay player, and the TMobile dongle thing to add.  Sheesh.   OH and also the Chromecast on VIZIO's  menu!   But you're right, they got a LOT more stuff in streaming than any of the stations ever dreamed of having on broadcast tv channels!!!!

I recall seeing it on cable provided by the apartments we were living in.  That was a LONG time ago man.
I looked at some web stuff for Brooke.  She's been married to this one fella now 20 years, they got 2 teenage daughters.  And Brooke seems like she survived the Blue Lagoon era pretty good.   I'm glad.  She seemed like a sweet lady all along.   Things I recall best about it was there was turmoil with her mother, maybe.  And Brooke did ok setting out on her own.  Also, she IS 6' tall, like my youngest daughter is.  Heh!  People I can look eye to eye with!  :o)

Yuup!  I got a few hundred DVD's and BluRay's too!   I ought to sit me down and create a list of my disks.   That will keep me  busy a week or more!  LOL!

On the streaming service, VUDU, I have only 159 movies, 3 TV series and a couple freebie 1st episodes.  I have the disks for all but maybe 4 items.  But still, that is no where near the number of titles I actually have the disks for!   Even if they ain't on VUDU.
Title: Re: New Rig coming up!
Post by: McGrandpa on October 28, 2021, 08:45:37 AM
I recall reading someone saying they weren't gonna get any BluRay's.   Considering, the picture quality is a lot better, and the sound is too.  Plus there is more room on the disk  so the authors put more special features on them for us to enjoy.   There IS one other great feature of BluRay disks.  They are made of way better material, are a tad thicker, harder and they are definitely slicker than any DVD I have seen.  Meaning they are much more scratch resistant!  Plus they don't collect fingerprints and smudges like TheLufias collects comics and Freebies!  LOL!

Well heck, to each their own.   We all have the right to choose what technology we will or won't go to, or use.   I walked away from all Cathode Ray Tubes for Liquid Crystal Displays.   I also opted to move from all fluorescing emissive lights to Light Emitting Diode lighting.   And some incandescant filament still!   And even though I do embrace BD disks, I haven't turned from DVD or even CD disks.   I have towers of them I need to use up!   But I definitely include BluRay as my favorite in store bought movies.  It isn't the ONLY format, but my favorite.  :)

Not a bad idea cataloging what you have.  Many a time I'm in a store and see a DVD that looks great but having been burned by duplication many times....I bring up my spreadsheet and do a quick search to see if I have it.  No more dups....much to the Grandsons dismay LOLOLOL

Yup, I got a few duplicates from not remembering accurately if I still got this or did the kids make off with it.   That's ok, the newer one is more often BD and has more goodies on it!  :D

Like, I got four different versions of AVATAR!   I did that every time a new version came out until I finally got the full four hours on ONE BD disk!   That took a while, but worth it.   Ah and one of them was a gift from family.    Same happened with the film SERENITY.   The Firefly TV franchise movie.  With all the usual suspects starring in it.  The last one I got was a Christmas present from sis and BIL, and I loved it cause it was the only BD version produced for it, and it is chock full of extra features.  Love it!
Which reminds me, I got to allow myself room for each entry to have notes added.  Yep.

No worries on that!  These folks are well used to getting people ready to be Home, and to succeed at it.   doing life 3 limbed is very simple.  And very hard.  We aren't used to using muscles for the way we have to do the normal stuff.  Therapy, physical and occupational, are working with me closely to make sure I am strong enough in needed ways to BE home.
So.  They beatin up on me man!  ;o)

IT is fantastic they found and fixed the single thing that caused all that chronic bit to that right foot.  And I am doubly blessed the Lady Doctor grabbed me and announced to the world that I am HER patient now.  I will mind this one, TL.  Totally.  Because of her, I still have 2 legs and 2 feet.  Damn straight I mind her!

But I can't get into my office yet because I still have presents in there for Mel, Pat and Shannon....  Due to Covid and snow...I won't see them till late February... But I can clear out a lot of the stuff so I can get to my computers and hard drives....but got to wait till the snow stops so I can move all the Christmas stuff to the shed... :thud:

Anyway....BEHAVE....

Yep,  some differences but minor ones.   Except for that wheelchair ramp out front!   That 'C' shaped thing is an obstacle course by itself, but it IS doable.
The boys, Tattoo and Mogwai, were both shocked (clearly!) when I came rolling in the front door.  They got over that pretty quick, and both started talking to me.   Mogwai ran under the wheelchair to the kitchen ahead of me.   I just put my hand down and called his name a couple times, and he gave the happy tail and walked right to me.  I rubbed his face, scritched his head and spoke happy things to him and he just kneaded the floor and purred.  Tattoo was still staring, all big eyed and talkative, but  stayed put on back of sofa.   When I got in bed, both came running in and hopped right up in front of me.  I am HOME now folks!  :oD

I am gonna call this thread "My Thread!" I guess.    Cause I gotta vent a little bit now and then.   Kinda like J's thread!

Copied over from J's thread:

"  Right, I keep forgetting that this thread is your let some steam off thread.   Hmm.  Maybe I should take a page from your book, J.    Rather than vent on the doctors and other sorts at the VAMC I go to for ALL my health needs I should keep a running journal or somesuch where I can safely vent my frustration and anger.   So it does not build to an absolute rage.

I have a "middle Asian"  person who is now my primary care physician.   She *DID* the very thing I was screaming at everyone I *HAD* to avoid for my health's sake.   SHE did not give one molecule of shit about that.  It was not part of HER agenda.  "I am doing this for you own good!"   Typical of every Asian National I have ever met.  That is a LOT of Asian National people.   It is tantamount to us or anyone saying "I HAVE THE RIGHT TO FORCE YOU!"   Not even the police have the RIGHT to any such measures.    SO.   I have spoken/vented the issue.   Steam pressure is now down to somewhere under CRITICAL.

We The People have the NEED for any person entering our country to truly grasp certain aspects of OUR culture.  THAT one thing may just be the defining characteristic of *US*!

Wish it was that easy for me to get to bed and sleep. Feel tired yet still not nodding off is an annoying trait I have, although there are nights where I go to bed and take a book off of the to be read pile on the nightstand and eventually I wake up in the morning with the book lost in the covers and my glasses ... lost ... then W is sleeping in some sort of yoga, Tai-Chi pose against my leg that would be impossible for a human to assume.

Have now received my 9th 2.5" SSD!  It is in the EZ DOCK, formatted and files being copied over to it.   I have been needing to get all my Photography stuff over to a better storage medium than a spinning USB hard disk.   Methinks that these SSD's have that covered.   They seem to have plateaued their plummet in price to around $100 per Terabyte.  I just bought a 2 TB WD 3D NAND SSD for $219.95.  A bit less than the one I got last year.   These 3D NAND SSD's seem to be faster and are said to be even more reliable than all the earlier ones I bought.  But hey,  the oldest one was used for the boot drive on the last computer I built.  It could not escape having files constantly re-written by WINDOZE.   Damn M$ anyways.
My last spinner HD (a Western Digital also) sent ALL its data off to Neverland at 5 years and 2 months of age/use.   2 months after the end of its warranty, wouldn't ya know.  So, me, I am quite happy to eliminate a few moving parts per 'drive'.   If The Machine Can Move It, The Machine Will Break It.  First axiom of Mechanics!   Moving parts equate to Failure of a device.  No help for that one.

TL what size SSD's are you using?   All my older ones are varying from 460g to 960g.  The latest 4 are all 2 TB.    I really appreciate the EZ Dock3 as it does the USB C port great.   Almost like plugging right into the SATA3 sockets on the motherboard.  They get up to 6 GBPS.

I've got (2) 2 TB .... and (2) 4 TB....  and 9 HHD's of various sizes...Not counting the ones I gave away to others.  That's what happens when you backup your backups LOLOL...

Speaking of Externals.  Western Digital has finally closed down it's service to it's WD Home Cloud Device.  I have a 4TB one that is useless at the moment....but sometime in the coming weeks I'll hotwire it to be used as a external drive.  Don't need it now...but hate wasting money...even if is 7 years old....

Their explanation is....Everyone now has a free cloud option so why buy one.  And to tell the truth...I barely used 1 TB on the 4TB cloud...and most of that was songs and family photos shared with friends and family...

Prefer physical here. can always use a battery to power up so no data loss.
Title: Re: McG's Place
Post by: thelufias on March 23, 2022, 12:28:36 PM
I use both....I always keep what is on the cloud on my externals...and with the new pocket size SSD's I have, I can just connect to the phone and send what I want off of them..or save photos directly onto them.

On the WD MY CLOUD I had, I used a 4TB WD Backup External to save anything new put on the My Cloud.  So even if it shut down without warning....I still had everything saved.

Me I got a hodge-podge of sizes.  I found the best of them to be the 3D NAND SSD's.  They are faster and even more reliable.  And now the prices are down to reasonable.   I have four 2TB, two 960g, one 1TB, one 500gb, and one 460gb which was the first one I bought.  Nine total  so far.  Nice thing about these USB SATA Drive Docks is just swap drives in and out as you want.   If you have a USB C port open, it will  let them run faster than 3 gb per sec.   Internal SATA speed is 6 gb per sec.   All I know is this stuff on BadMoonRYZEN  is way faster than the old George was!

I have an old 8 gig thumb drive from them that wanted to back up to their cloud every time I plugged the damnable thing in. All this talk about backup drives and I've been tossed the inevitable. My poor old Dell passed on this afternoon with nary a recent backup to be seen. I even specifically mentioned to Ed's wife that I was "... going to Wallyworld on the weekend to pick up a new coffee maker while they are still on sale for Boxing Day ..." and would pick up a couple of the 2TB SSDs and start a New Year clean back up and re-install. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas and has similar to Black Friday type deals. Procrastination strikes again.

Hey guys, y'all ever hear one called "Lord of the Drives" ?   Pretty good!  It paraphrases "Lord of the Rings"

"Three hard drives for the Elven-guys under the sky,
Seven DVD's for the Dwarf-lords on their computers of stone,
Nine Floppies for Mortal Men, all doomed to fry,
One vast HoloDrive for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Maxtor where our backups die.
One Drive to rule them all, One Drive to find them,
One Drive to bring them all, and in the darkness format them,
In the Land of Maxtor where our backups die."

-"Lord of the Drives"
  S.A.A. Briggs.

Stephen Briggs (he wrote this) modified the original last night.  I kept both versions, this here is the new one though.

I've got new drives, old drives, NVMe drives, and SSDs; both internal and external covering the dining table behind me. And lots and lots of parts.

So I dismembered the dead Dell. Very dead Dell. No P.O.S.T., No HDD, No love. The surge supressor fried overnight while I was sleeping and the box was rendering animation frames. Fried the Pi3 I was using as a controller for the backups too. Drives are fine but the Pi is cooked. Not a just dessert.

So this box, the Shanghai Cathouse; got some upgrades. It didn't really need any. It's a 10gen i7 @3.2 with 16 gigs DDR4 @3600 and a RTX 2070 Super with 6gigs DDR6 and a 1T NVMe for the main drive. It was my work/production box.

Well the renovations have started. It is no longer the production machine. This is the new entertainment center. I pulled the LG Blueray writer from the Dell and the drive bay multi card reader as well. They have now been installed in this case. My turntable is connected as well via USB.

I have installed two internal 2T Samsung SSDs in this machine.

First up is the Disco. That is one drive dedicated to my music, movies, and the like. Stuff you aren't going to find on the internet. That same drive will house Nero and other authoring software and as well as the studio software for my turntable.

The second drive is the Rec. Room. Easily explained. That's where the few games I play will end up. This system is perfectly capable of playing any game out there today at an acceptable frame rate. Online. Offline this machine produces jaw dropping visuals. I prefer to keep my games on a fast SSD rather than the main NVMe drive.

So this machine has had the reno but not everything has been moved in yet.

Stay tuned for the next chapter. There's a pump and reservoir and I can't swim. Could be interesting, but I really hope not.

Yeah I noticed two things when BadMoonRYZEN first fired up.  One, it did not even need a CPU, Ram nor vid card to get into the BIOS.  That was interesting!   So most mobos today have that feature.  A dedicated controller (perhaps like your and Sir Knights Pi's?) does all that work, with some built in video array and a bit of ram.   The machine going through that POST is 95% of the boot time.   The second thing;  It seems that this BIOS has pre-loaded most of the op system in some sort of onboard fast storage.   Loading W10 Pro 64bits is about 2 seconds.   I knew that all these various schemes of onboard 'flash' memory were gonna be a LOT faster than the old spinners.   SATA is great, but FLASH mem wasn't factored into its design.  SATA slows it down a bit.   What you have with the NVMe interface is literally interfaced directly to the Front Side Bus, along side system RAM.  That is FAST shit!  It is good to see that the modular concept is still in use, and done very effectively.   Many functions can interface to the main bus like that.  FSB is talking straight to the CPU.   That used to be how we got the CPU to talk effectively with all the slow bits we needed to attach to the system.   The 'chipset' has the various controllers in use now.   The list of those has grown long and distinguished!    Nowdays I just look through the User Manual while building a rig and see what IS available and how I access it, if I even can at all.   I was very impressed with all the goodies included in the AMD X570 chipset!   I had to look up about half of it to figure out what they do!   Talk about a kid in a candy store!   Wow!
PDG, I have not implemented some of the stuff yet that you have, and you are seeing the sheer speed benefit from it.   I will be dabbling in that soon, I think.  I have two M.2 ports that should be used as well as the 8 SATA ports.    Yeah, I put myself in the slow(ish) lane to give me time to absorb all this new information before I just jump right in trying to use what I don't understand yet.  I am now getting there, and glad to have this stuff to play with!

Are you overclocking the CPU and/or GPU?  That RTX you have, that monkey rocks!
Title: Re: McG's Place
Post by: parkdalegardener on March 29, 2022, 05:37:53 AM
That RTX is in the Shanghai Cathouse.

The new build will feature a RTX 3080ti. Waterforce cooling from AORUS. The ti version because I want the extra Tensor cores for ML inferencing.

The CPU on the kitchen table is a new Rocket Lake K so there is no clock lock.

The CPU will be liquid cooled so that yes, the stock 3.2 will be upped. It is capable of 5 if I keep the temps down.

Reservoir and radiator from CoolerMaster. 240L RGB The only RGB in this build. Hurrah. Cat might like the stuff but I find it quite tacky.

That fast boot you are describing is one of the main changes W11 makes in order to protect systems from cryptolocking, ransomware, and the like. Trusted Module Protection on an most mobos though it may have another name that sound similar depending upon who makes the board. Enabled it will slow your boot up time by a sec or two depending upon the system.

Crypto locking.   Another one to look up.   The mobo (chipset) has some real cool safety features run in firmware.  I don't disable the W10 anti-malware stuff either.   Redundancy in safety is a Good Thing.   ASUS website made mention of some of this involving the 'Evolving Crypto Coin' crap.   That concept bothers me bad.   Yeah I know, I am truly an old fashioned sort, specially for one wot calls himself a Techno Geek.

As an electrician, I troubleshoot and build actual circuits and run them in my minds eye.  So when something behaves different in the hard circuit in front of me, I can easily find the problem.   I like doing the same with my computers circuits man.  But, guess what?  My poor little brain ain't big enough for THIS stuff!  GAH!   So I try to do that in modules.   The actual factual circuit needed to create a Not-AND gate nearly fried my functioning brain cell!  And that is a pretty simple one.

I have had  some of the stuff to do a bit of water cooling.   Video card.   Maybe should have gone that way for that card, but chose all air cooling with quiet operation.  Ha!   Sold the water cooling stuff, but kept and used the heat tube stuff, learned it really does work.

Long long ago, in a shipyard far far away, there lived a young man that built logic gate circuits on 2x4s with nails and single throw relays 3 inches square. Test circuits to show the big boffins. To explain the future because they couldn't see inside my mind.

Was raising kiddos on the Electricians earnings.   We called the ones that were 'in house' Maintenance Electricians.  That was me.  Then there were Romex Runners (residential) and 'Plumbers' and/or industrial (commercial).   And I loved the work!   First, Relay-Relay Logic. Next I recall Relay-Diode Logic.  But the innards of the logic gates are created with transistors, resistors, diodes etc.  Discrete components, yeah?  Hmmn.  but can create the LOGIC with relays and switches.  And diodes.

So McG the construction is complete but that's as far as I got for now. Today after a bit of coffee I'll start the software installations. W11 will probably take a while but we'll see.

Liquid cooled i7 11700KF running at 3.2 for the next few days at full load to check all is assembled correctly and there are no leaks or weak components in the system. It can go to 5 in 3 steps.

32 gig RAM: 2x16 Corsair Vengeance @3200. Slight issue as I had 32 gig from the Dell but it is ECC. This board MSI Creatorx299. Six ram slots with a top out at 256 gig. Problem. It doesn't like ECC RAM. so looks like I need to pick up 32 gig non-ECC sometime in the future. Life sucks.

1T WD Black NVMe as OS drive and a 2T Samsung SSD as data drive.

The video card is a liquid cooled RTX 3080ti. 12 gig DDR6 ram. Hard to come by these days but I'm tenacious.

More coffee.

I kinda envy you over that video card man!   Them things don't come cheap.   My card did, at $188.33 clearance at NewEgg.   My motherboard was the most expensive single part I bought.    That was $344.80.   Storage/RAM  Speed difference is staggering man.   We been kinda buzzing around and around the idea of having STORAGE speeds up there with RAM speeds  For some 4 decades now. From before the time I even had a 'mass storage drive' as in FLOPPY.   Well.  PDG you are seeing those speeds finally getting closer to equal!
And me, I gave up the Keep Up With The Joneses thing the first time I tried it.   But tech stuff?  Can't help it, that's my toys man!

A question, PDG.    I am looking at examples of M.2  NVMe and M.2 SATA SSD.   The 'slot' is the M.2 part, right?  So will either one plug into the same M.2 slot?   OR does the slot have to be specifically set for NVMe?
Title: Re: McG's Place
Post by: parkdalegardener on March 31, 2022, 04:45:48 AM
Nope not exactly the same. As you noted NVMe interfaces directly with the PCIe on the MB where as M2 uses the SATA bus. Depending upon the MB and the drive the NVMe may fit into the MB's M2 slot. They are keyed slightly differently. Again it is bus dependant on your board. Gamers should stick to M2. NVMe is faster, 5 or 6 times as fast; but the speed is only really noticeable when working with large files. Sequential read/write rather than Random Access. I work with animation data. Large sequential files.

My first "mass storage device" was paper tape. I was more than impressed when I got to magnetic storage. A cassette tape.

Video card. Yeah. Only a little bit expensive he says sarcastically. Well over 2k when the taxes were applied. The battle with the cryptominers. The only folk that can afford the new cards.

Keeping up with anyone is a waste of your cash and time, not to mention sanity. I don't bother. I'm probably not going to buy/build another box in my lifetime. That allows me to convince myself I'm not going overboard. I'll never do this again. Yeah; said that before too.

I heard ya!   I said that with the last major build 12 years ago.   This new iteration is well overdue.  But I studied the tech and cobbled my coppers together first.   Then when I hit the online/Delivery stores I was ready.   Ready for anything but 'Not In Stock' for some things.   Walmart.com and NewEgg both hunt down and use small suppliers as well as large.   NewEgg just happened to have the two hardest to find components.  I ended up spending my pennies at three different sites.   Ah well, it got DONE.   And BadMoonRYZEN exists, runs and I am happy with it.   It is kinda like taking a wrecked pickup into your garage/shop, working on it for two months solid with all the stuff that YOU want in it, then on yer Birthday, fire that mutha up and drive the newly christened Rat Rod out that garage on first crank!   Hey that's a righteous analogy for an old disabled fart, yaknow?
Thanks for being my muse for a bit PDG!   That gave me a nice little render scene project to work up.  LOL!   BUT I am gonna find a way to make his engine with 16 cylinders!   ;o

DOH!  Memory surge!   PDG, I know you are into Formula racing and such.  Would you remember an actor (Disney!) turned Drag Racing fanatic name of Tommy Ivo?   I recall his quad-V8 'rail', 4 wheel drive.  Had to be fun, let the clutch(es) out, and smoke 4 huge tires all the way down the track.   I saw what and how he did all that,  out in California.   Pretty cool, but simple enough.  Just had to use MUCH beefier parts to handle all that torque.   :o)

all this reading and using the NVMe SSD for this motherboard still is not clear.   Directly from the manual, the two M.2 slots are usable for either SATA bus or PCIe 4.0 bus.   The NVMe cards all use the PCIe form, yes?   Both slots are single key.   There are also the standard length 'fitting' screw holes.  So the 22110 size is the biggest that can go in one of these slots.   I still want to see it stated in certain terms though;  "PCIe 4.0 uses the NVMe cards".  THAT says I can use the NVMe items I see online everywhere now.

AMD Ryzenâ„¢ 3rd Generation Processors
 - 1 x M.2_1 socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/ 22110
storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 4.0 x 4 mode)

AMD Ryzenâ„¢ 2nd Generation / Ryzenâ„¢ 2nd and 1st Generation
with Radeonâ„¢ Vega Graphics Processors
 - 1 x M.2_1 socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/ 22110
storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)

AMD X570 Chipset:
 - 1 x M.2_2 socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110
storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 4.0 x 4 mode)
 - 8 x SATA 6Gb/s ports
 - Supports Raid 0, 1, 10

I have two M.2 slots.    Seems both are usable as either SATA SSD or as PCIe 4.0  x4 device.  Lots of possible devices it appears.  Sheesh why didn't I know about this two years ago ?!?!?

It is pretty easy to see why you went with PCIe for that storage item.  It has become more like RAM than SATA drive!

All our 3D stuff can make some hideously huge files.   Just some of my dressed and smart propped Figures ready to render approach 1 gigabyte.  And many of my scenes are several gigs to dozens of gigs.   Waiting for Poser to handle its own scrap file is what kills the times for me.  Grrrr.

Put the question to web search, and there are lots of folks that report they are using NVMe SSD's on either or both M.2 slots.  With the 3rd gen RYZEN on this mobo, both slots are PCIe 4.0  x4.   SO.  Next SSD buy will be a 1TB NVMe SSD.   The WD Black ain't a bad price for that.

M2 is a form factor. It's a standard for construction of interface cards. The card use really doesn't matter. Normally it's used for storage due to the throughput. The edge connectors will determine if the product is going to connect to the SATA bus or the PCIe bus.

Your motherboard chipset will determine if you can access PCIe4 via the connection. Some need to be flashed for the update.

Most people using M2 drives are using SATA drives attached through the M2 connection on the mainboard.

Some caveats to use. You really need to keep the temperatures in your case cool. These drives don't respond well to heat and like most Flash RAM and SSDs, they have a limited lifespan. You really need to have a good backup solution in place and be prepared to have to strip your PC to change the drive if it fails. Most slots are on the bottom of the board and not readily accessible so be prepared to strip the machine down in 2 years or less for drive replacement. That is why these drives are better for working with large files and data transfer. Less random writes. I use them for the OS and some very specific software. All swap files and data storage are on a SSD.

And yeah; I remember Tommy Ivo. Built rails and raced them. Long time ago.

They got me on high replacement D and B-12 right now.   Last bloodwork my A1C was 6.8 but both the D and B12 were WAY low.   So for whatever reason I  am having fun memory flashes like that about Ivo and the Quad 327 Rail.   I woke up still in a dream about Annette Funicello where she was B&W in the sweater with A on it and she had on her Mousket-ears.   Seems somehow brain is re-associating memory.   Again.  Well, it IS kinda fun!
Happily I can still see what's real and what's the memory.

I did find a couple forums with people that are using this same motherboard with the same BIOS version and they are using NVMe SSD in their M.2 slots.  They also state the same as you to be very careful about temps with these things.   For instance, running 40C (that's HOT man) on these things shorten their life by HALF.    So, I AM looking at what I have,  what I NEED, and what I think I want to try out just to see about stuff.  The needs are pretty well taken care of now.    Filling the M.2 slots is just satisfying my curiosity.    I don't need to use M.2 yet.   So for the now, I won't.   I am still smiling over the huge speed increase just moving from 2007 tech to 2020.   Faster CPU, RAM and yep, even the SATA3 speed doubled instantly.   And everything is running cooler.  That truly does make me happy.

You're doing major animations, I can see your need for the PCIe 4.0 special drive.   As you suggest, I reviewed my stuff and might occasionally have a real use for that.  But nothing I am doing is suffering any bog downs or bottlenecks that I can see at all.  And I am loving that, PDG!   So I'll pass on this particular upgrade for now.   At least the research informs me what this IS, and that my system is able to use it, and that I am doing great without it.

Thanks for the info man.   This was great!   :D

This box, The Shanghai Cathouse; has an ambient internal temp of 45c under load. Air cooling with a lot of fans. The 2070 RTX in this box is at 42 ambient due to air cooling only and by far is the hottest thing under the hood when running at load.

The new box has an ambient temp of 31c under load. The graphics card is at 29c ambient and the CPU is at 21C. For the first time in my life there is cold air circulating around my feet. Not sure I like it. The ambient air temp in this apt is 27c with a space heater cranked.

40c is nothing for most boxes I've built over the years. At 45 I debate the cooling solution and add more circulating air.

Yeah; I've a LG Blueray re-writer I took from the Dell and put into the Cathouse. Haven't written to BR in years but still need to read the disks.

Everything is up and running just fine. ATM I am working with some experimental stuff in Cycles. The missing micro-poly displacement and some animated volumes. Boring stuff with many many test renders up till now. The new box is powerful enough to do Cycles in Blender in near real time which speeds up the workflow immensely. I have yet to really use the machine with Poser. Micro-poly is almost there which will make it easier to do things like skin in Blender. Currently in Cycles the only way to achieve a responsible outcome is to crank up the subdivision. That will change soon; but more polys are more RAM right now and that means bigger cards. That is changing as Cycles gets set to make better use of system RAM without the need for special graphics cards.

That's cool, guess I ought to check Blender out too.   Isn't GRam faster than SDRAM?  Dumb question.  Tired here.  I should go look it up.
The more GRam the cards have the more they cost too, of course.  Other things are coming with the graphics processors too.   The technology never stops moving, and it's always vertical!   But doing Cycles nearly in real time?  That's unreal man!   I remember one hour renders were normal for me.  Now, the same scene loaded in from 2008 takes a minute.  HA!   The 8 core/16 threads whoopin some butt now!   I haven't really *TRIED* most of the software I've bought over the years.   Poser, DS 3.0A, Vue 6 Inf.,  Photo Shop CS 4 Advanced.   I have blender, ZBrush, Modo 401, Silo installed and they run great on this rig.   I just haven't really tried anything the last 3 to 4 years.   Trying to come back up after the cancer, struggling with the diabetes going nuts after that.  Now with some solutions that work in place, I am feeling a lot better but still weak and tire easily.  I have never been one to just give up though.  So.  Here I go!  Life IS a struggle!  So I DO IT!
When I wake up tonight PDG, I'll model some *thing* in one or all those programs.   It's a bird!  It's a Plane!  Who the heck knows what it is!  LOL!

I know how you feel. I stopped with the high end software over the years. It's been 5 years or so since I've had Vue installed, I think zBrush was 4R4 last I looked. Again not installed any longer. Haven't used any of the Adobe apps since before they went subscription back on Win7.

I have a hard time keeping on course. I've health issues beyond the pale. I quit PFDLives and removed my account there in part due to the fact that I was paralyzed below the neck for a couple years and relied on speech to text (Dragon Dictate) while I got myself together again. It was hard. My wife died three  Christmases ago. Two Christmases ago I finally decided to have some rather drastic surgery and had a 750 ml tumour removed from my spine at the base of my skull. Used to joke about the worlds longest comb-over. More than a metre. To cover my bald spot from the surgery. Now some days are better than others but all are better than what they were.

It's all about keeping busy for me. I need to move or I freeze up. It is a struggle to move out of bed each day but the struggle is better than the alternative and I've lived the alternative. My friend Ed helps out when he can. I am no longer allowed to drive so he comes by once a week to take me to the grocery. I haven't seen his wife or kid in years now due to the pandemic.

I make animations to amuse myself. Blender is up to date on this machine because it is all singing, all dancing all that you need. Well maybe. Poser is P12 and P11 is still on this machine though I don't use it much. I only kept it up to date and installed P11 because I used to answer Poser questions and offer tutorials on PFD. P12 was purchased out of more than 20 years of loyalty.

Near real time Cycles might be closer to real time with CyclesX but I haven't gone there. Crap phone gotta go.

I hear that about MOVING.   Get stove up just being still.  I Just can't do that, it hurts more being in bed!   So, I wake, and get me up.  Slowly, I ain't gonna fall.   Use handholds like beds footboard, wheelchair arm for balance.  Get butt UP, torso leaned forward and legs are now under butt!  Heh!

I did not wake up last night, stayed awake till 8pm, then finally fell asleep around 10pm.  Woke this am at 8.  Feels good too!   So, ZBrush is running.  Err, you do know if you ever had a license to ZBrush (full regular one) then you get free updates/upgrades right?
ZB 4R8 P2 was the last release under that naming scheme.  Now it is  named with year.  Latest version is ZBrush 2022.0.5   That's what is running right now.   Sculptris got renamed, it is called ZBrush Core Mini now.  It got upgraded too, now 64 bit, output more compatible with main program.  Overdue stuff actually, but done now!  It's easier by far for whipping up little stuff.    Just go to your Pixologic > Support > Licenses page, see two tabs, download both ZBrush proper and the Core Mini.   And enjoy!

I noticed finally that Pixologic/ZBrush are now part of MAXON.  Yup, the Cinema4D folks.  Seems they own a LOT of 3D assets now.  But Pixologic is still on ZBrush, but with Maxon in small font under it.   That is what got my attention.  Curious, I checked that out.
My Vue6 Inf.  Even after years and years,  one email is all it took to get my license dropped off a dead machine and a new one issued for the new rig.   Was way easier than the same for Poser Pro 2014.   I did the same as you with Poser 12.  My first ever Poser was v. 6 on release day.  Got this big bundled deal with MODO 201 and Poser 6 with some huge content bundle and MIKI (n) Complete.  That was only $999.99.   I made sure to get $900 worth of cussing in.

See Poser was only 32 bit and I was running a brand new A6 AMD X2 4800+ with Win XP Pro x64 OEM (experimental 64 bit I might add!).  Crashing was constant.   But Intel didn't have a  64 bit CPU on market yet.   So I was unintentionally the first kid on the block with that new toy.  GAH!  I got the 64 bit Win XP free, via the  Far Cry 64 promotional deal from AMD itself.  Later Windows 64 bit were MUCH better, of course.  Turned out it was a AMD & Nvidia conflict that cause the ruckus in my rig.  AMD had absorbed ATi the old video card company in Canada.  AND they may have hated Nvidia, so I am guessing they sort of kind of deliberately did some little thing in code to ensure much Nvidia crashing on an AMD rig.  Differences must be ironed out with whatever.  Not seeing any crashing at all now.  Loving that too!
I am back to AMD CPU with an Nvidia graphics card now.   This GTX 1650 Super is something else man.

OKAY!  Time to warm the bad boy UP!  :D

The Govt has did it again.  Of COURSE they did!   Can't have Catch 22 without it!   The Veterans Affairs has created a new way to fork it to the Veteran in the form of a new way for qualified Vets to get reimbursed for travel.   WE can no longer receive a cash payout from the Disbursing Clerk.  We no longer have the Beneficiary Travel Claim entry available at the check-in Kiosks.  It is completely removed.  What we have to do now is go to the "BTSSS" web site.  Well, most interesting.  There is NO SUCH WEBSITE.  Catch 22.  There IS a way to get there to it, though.  First ya got to log into your VA MyHealTheVET page.  Then find in Personal tab the new odd looking one for dealing with funds.  Hm. Weird.  THAT opens the page that IS the Portal TO the BTSSS.   Remember the Disbursing Clerk?  He don't hand out cash any more, but he is still the one that approves your even getting a claim filed!

There is always more than one solution to any problem.   But which one is best?   There are no absolutes, only shades of grey.

Those kept nibbling at the fringes of my mind this morning.  I finally called (phone) the VA Disbursing Clerk.  He answered the phone, I ID'd myself, and laid out my problem in simplest way.   See, we veterans are now forced to make travel reimbursement via a website.  And I discovered a bad issue with this new one.  Well, seems it is bad only in my own mind.  The Clerk can (of course) see the very things needed that I could not.  This Is By Design.   EVIL design at that!
You can NOT make a claim for a visit IF there is a "Cancelled by clinic" even if immediately followed 30 mins later by a "Visit Complete!" as they have to reschedule appointments by cancelling original first then making second.  The "Visit Complete!" does not show up for me, but does for the clerk.  So, I cannot make claim!  THIS forces the Veteran to Make A Frikkin Phone Call to said Clerk.  HE makes and approves the claim and sends it off to Washington DC.  I had a talk with our clinics Clerk about that, and I said with straight face "I will never allow you to cancel/ReSchedule an appointment that way in one day again.   It is just too costly for me!  Each 120 mile round trip I get $53.61, and the tank of gas I got today ran me $49.10.  Yep.

So, NOW I know.  Catch 22.

Yeah, a simple observation here;  BadMoonRYZEN has turned out to be a surprisingly robust build.   I still got a bit of 'tuning up' to massage in some of the storage element.  The CPU and its fan controls are great, same for the GPU and its fans.  At the moment, they are averaging from 90 - 111 °F.   Idling.  I can do 2D art and text stuff, watch YouTubes and stuff all day long and the temps are really low.   THEN depending on the load with 3D and or 3D Games, it can climb a bit.  Never been over 160F yet, and system maintains 150F for the high now.  I LIKE this!  16 hyperthreads, 64 gigs of DDR4 ram, with CPU/GPU swapping load bits in/out with each other.  Yeah, that's cool and unexpected stuff!  WooHoo!   :happydance:

Trying to conjure up what I can give to BadMoonRYZEN for ITS birthday.   Can't afford several hundred bucks for one of those great RTX video cards.  Its CPU already whoops azz all around town!  It already has 64 gigs of DDR4 SDRAM.   I scored big on the TMobile High Speed Home Internet.  I got 8 or 9 SSD's.   Maybe another, say a 2TB, to replace that old 480Gig one.  Yeah, I can do that!  :D
I may just store that 480Gig one.  It's the Win 7 Pro 64bit OS for old King George, the Intel Q9550 quadcore.  The one BadMoonRYZEN replaced!

Out in  the wilds of the High Plains exists a thing called "The Four Lane".   Two  lanes of highway each way, huge median between the E two and the W two.   Just can't go wrong, right?   Wrong.   Two local folks decide they are gonna slow down all the speeders, breaking the law.   Yep, so they are thereby breaking the law themselves, impeding the flow of all traffic.   Right.  A pickup with some farmer Joe driving it.   And one of those farm type tank trucks, likely a fertilizer truck, Driving side by side, with both about 30 mph on a 75 mph highway.  I just dropped way back, pull off the road, sip my coffee and check  the phone.  I've seen this before.  So I see a State Trooper car zoom by.  And  a Sheriff's car behind that.  So I get back on road and in a few minutes come across a calamitous scene plus some.  Driver of that tank truck shrugging while talking with a Deputy.   Old scarecrow looking fella being all belligerent like, getting handcuffed by a Trooper.  Hm.  Gonna get noisy in County Jail I think.   Most all those "speeders" work for a major company that does stuff for Uncle Sam.   Don't even ask.  And it is so early, it isn't even daylight yet.  Happily no wrecks nor injuries though.   So THAT morning I was exactly on time for my appointment.  Not early, which is my usual.
I figure if you drive, you've seen this kind of thing too.   Sure could be worse.
McG.

We have the same thing here .... but here they got smart....They have 4 lanes with extra wide pullover lanes for tractors, rigs, and cops pulling over speeders.  Even our two lanes have extra wide pullover lanes for the farm equipment to travel on.

Post by: McGrandpa on July 11, 2022, 11:16:54 PM
We sure need the extra wide 'shoulders' up here.   Some of those farm tractors are well over a lane in width.   But whoever that scarecrow like fella was, he has no business deliberately blocking all passing.   That's just mean.

DAMN a buncha Western Digital a-wipes!    I found the culprit, I think.   I had allowed WD to update its 'dashboard', as that is the utilities for the SSD's.   I had dl'd the WD Dashboard because the SanDisk one looked for ONLY SanDisk SSD's.  It would not even show me the WD ones.  And the WD one shows me all the SSD's I have attached to the system.   Directly to SATA ports and also the ones in the USB3 dual bay dock.  All these SSD issues began the moment the WD Dashboard became operational.   And file reads and drive transfer speeds all went to crap immediately.   CRAP.

I think I need to find someone elses dashboard!

Good possibility. Why a dashboard though? Too many drives for the number of ports available?

Title: Re: McG's Place

Yeah on # of drives;  There are 8 SATA ports on the motherboard, and I have 10 SSD's and one SATA BLURAY rewriter.   So I have the EZ USB3 dual SATA drive bay.  Does spinners and SSD.   But I saw all the info on the SanDisk utility, and wanted that for all the SSD's.  Well, the WD one does all that and slowed em all down to molasses for accessing them now.   I don't NEED a dashboard, it's just handy I guess.  But Windoze does see and provide the info for all the drives, including the little USB external 1TB ones I've had for years.  Will uninstall all that WD stuff and reboot, see what happens.

OK, so some time later, the WD Dashboard is uninstalled, folder(s) removed, and the warm restart does show improvement in transfer bandwidth between programs and the SSD's.   And SSD to SSD, also, of course.

Ridiculous, huh?

All I do is hook up my Externals to Hubs.  Got a 5 port Hub, a 10 Port Hub, 8 ports on the back of the puter and since this is a gaming puter it has 5 ports in the front of the puter.  And there have been times when all were used...and nothing slowed down...Thankfully....

Reason I even suspected something was up with the WD dashboard, was WIN 10 stopped it and asked me what kind of networking I wanted it to do.  So, I checked the logs like Sir Knight said, and PDG too.   What the hell was it writing to the disks?  Far as I know it has no need to do anything but read the things.   But, every time I ran it, it wrote to all the SSD's but not the little external spinner.    Uninstalling it helped, but have to USE the drives (or so it seems) to unclog them.  Or something.   Most files do read instantly again, some don't.  All writes are very fast again.
Back to what PDG had to say about the big brother aspect of computering around.   ALL users, be advised to be on your guard...not that 99% have a clue what to do anyway.

ASUS has been randomly resetting BadMoonRYZEN.   Last night, I caught them in the act.   BUT, the reason seems to be I have blocked off their "AsusUpdateCheck.exe", they force autoupdate for THEIR stuff.   That Is Unacceptable.

Today is the first time in months I shopped and bought an item at either Renderosity or DAZ3D.   I was at DAZ, and though it's been about 2 years since ANYONE there made a thing that has Poser Companion Files (that I know of), I still enjoy looking at a couple of peoples stuff.  AND I like keeping up with the technology.   Stonemason is one of those special people.   I mean, the man is an Artist, and we can USE his ART to create our own Art!  Isn't that cool!    He has a new item out, called WONDERLAND.   Totally wild looking Asian kind of setting, IN WATER!  Neon lights all over, and the architecture looks fun.   Kind of like combining Urban, Future Punk, and classic Streets of Asia in one cool and wild looking set.   He also included an .OBJ (or general type) installer for this one.  It's on sale, so I scarfed it right up!   Now to go see how I can use its new OBJ stuff in Poser(s) !!!!  :D  |Ha! :woohoo:   I Also got Nineveh 6 Starter Bundle FREE!   Everyone can get that one for free too.  :D    But y'all gotta take a peek at WONDERLAND!   https://www.daz3d.com/wonderland

Well, I still keep adding bits to BadMoonRYZEN
and it keeps on improving.   I have 2 USB3 sata3 drive docks now, 11 SSD's, most are 2 TB WD Blues.  Some are the older SanDisk Ultra II OR III.  The rig has to be shut down and all drives pulled, 7 of them plug into tke mobo SATA3 ports.  The 8th has the BD Burner on it.  Then I will plug both SATA3 dual bay drive docks into actual USB3 ports in the back breakout.  This should improve the throughput of the SSDs plugged into them!   AFAIK, that is all the room for SSD's I have at the moment.   Heh!

BadMoonRYZEN.   What a name!  I love it!  I sit here and look at it,  and marvel how cool it runs.  Purely air cooling.  CPU clock is 4.050 Ghz., CPU Diode is 127F, GPU Diode is 88F right now.   Neither of their fans is running much right now.  500 rpm for the CPU, both GPU fans are at 1000 rpm.   I cannot hear it running right now!   When I get to rendering in Poser, playing the big games, the fans do pick up speed.  CPU and GPU get up to about 150F and stay there.  I never expected it to behave THIS well!   64 gigs DDR4 SDRam, using 8 gigs of it right now.  About to crank Poser Pro 2014 up, and Steam, and play No Man's Sky or Horizon Zero Dawn.  Both are pretty big games.   Both run on the 32" monitor, 2560 x 1440 at 75 FPS.  Pretty cool yeah!  :D

:sure:

              :shj:     :lostme:

I am not positive, but didn't we just have a newer model space ship pass up one of those old Voyager space probes??  WHEW!   (Pth Pth!  Meep Meep!  Roadrunner, the Coyote's after you!)   Naaah.  I think I was just daydreaming!

OKAY!   I popped the card on a PNY version at Wallyworld, and also the hose kits for the washer.  Those cards were either being dropped out of the catalog, or price upped by $100.  Yech!   So, New Egg showed this one PNY for less than $300, so I copied the whole name of it to clipboard, and pasted it in the WalMart search.  And it suddenly appeared!   For $289.99.  I want it here in BadMoonRYZEN by the 1st (me birthday!) so I figure it ain't getting any better than this one by then.  So I got it.   Will be here Thursday.  Or I demand a refund.  YAH!
The ASUS ones were suddenly over $400!  Ewww!  Well PNY was always a good make for me, as was EVGA.   But the longest running video cards I ever used were by EVGA.   Still have one of those, and it still works great.  Just that the GTX 7800 is a tad behind the needs of today.

Hey PDG, if you buzz by this thread, what do ya think of these ones HERE (https://www.walmart.com/ip/PNY-GeForce-RTX-3060-12GB-VERTO-Dual-Fan-Graphics-Card/1474721811)?   Since you had spoken so well of the new functions in the RTX cards, as well as the smaller die size and cooler performance, I kinda followed the RTX's a little bit.   As with most things NVidia, they start off with the 1000's series, then come the 2000's and 3000's hot on their heels.  Finally, after over a year of waiting, the 4000's land and scatter the competition.  Which leaves the 3060's in a bit of vacuum and their prices dropped a lot.   I am sure I could wait till Christmas and maybe get one under $200 like I did the card in the machine now.  $188.99!   But, I am Birthday Greedy at the moment.   I am thinking the RTX 3060 OC 12 gig DDR6 will way outperform this GTX1650 S 4 gig DDR6 card.   Only way to know for sure is to put it in and GO!  :D

Wishes and Wallet.   I actually did put the two together and come up with BadMoonRYZEN.  Then kept adding, swapping this and the other out, getting better each time.   So, today, three years later, this desktop stands as a great gaming AND art rig.  BOO-YEAH!   It rarely uses even 40 gigs system RAM, but it DOES hit that and more with Poser, ZBrush and rendering big scenes.  The really big surprise is what used to take hours now takes minutes.   YEAH!   :yippee: !!!

And so, from now through the weekend, I think I will begin the Teaberry Shuffle with all my SSD's!   6 or 7 will go inside the case, the others can go in the two Dual SATA Drive Docks (USB3).   The price of the newest NAND 3D 2 TB internal 2.5" SSD's is right at $150 at the moment.   That is less than I paid for the original 460g SanDisk SSD from several years back.  Heh!   The big thing is there are two older ones inside that are not being used.  And two outside that need to be inside, getting used at higher speed.   Yep!  :D

Oh goodie.  It is Saturday again.   I missed doing this last week.   But the reason is that I am trying to find out how to get things to see their new residency inside the PC on the internal SATA3 ports.   Not where they are in the external dock slots.  GAH!   Microsoft took something simple and stuffed it chock full of damnable, unnecessary security protocols that serve NOTHING for the User.   Nope.  Seems they protect ol Tiny Limp from US.
Got stuff to learn.  Specially from STEAM.

Lessee . . . got 6 SSD's plugged into the internal SATA ports.   Plus two in the SATA drive dock.  Plus 3 more not plugged into anything yet.   All the ones outside are 2 TB NAND3D SSD's.   Two of the ones inside are 2 TB.  I COULD get those 7 plugged into the internal SATA3 ports.  And that leaves my ol Pioneer BLuRay RE-Writer on the 8th port.  YAH!   Well, that IS the plan.  Heh!   We shall see!

That is why I haven't started the physical part of the plan.   Going by the "measure twice, cut once"  axiom, I hope not to mess it up.  I know SOME things I have are very sensitive to the drive they reside on and the drive letter it's assigned.   STEAM being one of the most notable items.   So, I will investigate, measure and when I am happy with it, then shut it down, pull the power cord out and dig right in!
Wanna move Win10Pro from its current 500G drive to a 2TB drive.   Still got a little bit of research to do yet.  :oD

I have like 3 of those smaller SSD's that are getting no use at all anymore.   I know which they are by their actual capacities.  SO.  I can pull two of them, at least, and put two new 2 TB ones in to replace em.   And so on.  ;o)

DAMN!   All mine together, MIGHT actually hit 20 TB.   Will have to add em up.   But I don't have like ten of the 2TB ones.  just 5 or 6.

Doing the routine little HD count, I saw I have a total of 8  2TB SSD's.   And that leaves 5 SSD's from 460G to 1TB.  I sure hope Win10 Pro plays nice migrating from the 500G to a 2TB drive!   I have 8 internal SATA3 ports, the Pioneer BLuRay ReWriter is on one, leaves 7 for my SSD's.   Almost time to start playing musical chairs with em!

For over a year CASPER was my fave movie.  And a couple of my kids too.  The disk stopped playing, I bought another of the same thing.  Then a lady at the rental place said they could fix a DVD.  I took that old one in, she put it in her polisher, and it worked like new again.  So I have a spare CASPER, and I already supplied all my kids with their own :)

Got a LOT of Casper Comic Books along with the Ghostly Trio.  Casper was Travis's favorite cartoon when he was a wee one....And

He loved Barney...which I never let him forget.  Linda took a video of Travis sitting on my lap and singing the Barney Song and not even paying attention to her LOLOLOL.  Whenever he denies he watched Barney I pull out the Vid and put it into the player (yup....I still have a player...It also copies VCR's to CD's....)

I can't blame anyone but me for my duplicate purchases.   Except for folks gifting me with movie presents I already have.   That is how I got 4 copies of Serenity.   And 4 of the original Avatar.   When those first came out, DVD's hadn't been replaced by BluRay yet.   There are just some films I just love, and just keep watching them wearing my goofy smile.  Every time.  :)

Ah me, finally I got the Surface I dreamed of a dozen years ago.   And I got the raw end of that deal with a simple Surface RT.  I think the acronym stands for Real Turd.    It does next to nothing useful!   Too small, too little too nothing.  Grrr.  This Surface Pro Gen5 is WAY better!   :D

OKAY!  I finally got in all the bits to the puzzle called "BUNDLE" !!   And the whole thing works great.   All those 2 in 1 makers popping up all over 10 years ago never did get it right.   The Surface Pro with Stylus (fine point!) and Type Cover are a very thin, light and powerful combination hard to beat.  REAL hard!

Best part is that it performs as advertised!   Plus, the Surface Pro 5th Gen comes with Win 10 Pro.  NOW I got a sick little message when I started it earlier saying something about getting ready for Win 11.   *NOOOOOOOO!*   That will ROYALLY piss me off!   GRRR!

Darnit!   My "new" 32" monitor started going out.   It's only some 3 years old.   Some of the LED backlight(s) died, left a near black patch in the lower left corner almost as big as a 7" cell phone.   So a couple days ago I ordered a new one from Wallywolrld.   It's up and running right now.   This one is a 32" gaming monitor, and I hope it lasts longer than the other one.  This one seems to be pixel perfect.   Which is excellent for a $200 monitor!  On sale of course.  :oD

I had a big screen TV that the backlights on the left side stopped working.  TV wasn't even that old.  It was a LG and only had it for 4 years.  Now I only buy Vizio.  Had this one now for 7 years and works great.  I've got so many "Spare" monitors that if one broke down, there are 3 to replace it LOLOL
Title: Re: McG's Place
Post by: McGrandpa on January 31, 2024, 01:26:30 AM
Looks like I am working hard to catch up to ya TL!   I still have my first ever LCD monitor.  A 17" NEC (still perfect!), plus a couple 23"/24" Acers, and now that 32" LG that I just replaced with a very different LG gaming monitor.  It is just a higher grade, and it shows too.  I hope it lasts forever.  Crossing fingers!  Samsung is the brand I just stay away from, as the 5 I have owned all crapped out right at end of warranty.  Too many to be coincidental methinks.  They build timed failure into theirs.   LG *MIGHT* be doing that too.   If so, they get added to my Shunned list.
Title: Re: McG's Place
Post by: McGrandpa on January 31, 2024, 01:31:32 AM
That NEC monitor is the only fluorescent lit product I have left.  All light bulbs, kitchen 2 tube light, and TV's and monitors are all LED now.   A bit of research tells me that LED is better for our old eyes than fluorescent and incandescent both.   LED can be frequency controlled to customize the colors and intensities of each color.  Wow, that's impressive!  :o)

Knowing how well the vid card HDMI port works, I thought I would try out one of its Display Ports for the 1st time ever.  It being APPLE oriented I never considered that before.   There are no DVI ports on my new vid cards.  Each has 1 HDMI and THREE Display Ports.  Is Nvidia perdickting the PLANET is going all Applesauce now?  Sheesh!  Me, no I am not.  But, had to buy a damn DP cable in self defense!  DP actually works ok.  Terrible!   Tsk tsk tsk.  So the NEW new monitor is using its DP now.   ;o)

It is time, WAY overdue actually, to do serious housekeeping to my abundant supply of internal SSD's.
just ordered $100.00 of parts from Wallyworld.   A 2.5" SSD rack fits 4 SSD's to one 5.25" drive bay.  I
will be getting 2 of these ones.  AND also got a 4 SSD to 3.5" bracket.  Also got a USB 3.0 seven port on pcie 1x adapter card and a 6 SATA III port on pcie 1x adapter card as well.   Got a 'daisy chain' 5 plug SATA power cable extension and another 5 SATA data cables.  This will give me a total of 14 SATA 3 ports and around 15 USB 3 ports.
All the bits n bobs ought to be in by Feb 16.   This will allow me to completely clean up the inside the old mid tower case.
And BadMoonRYZEN might be as good looking as a store bought PC!
FINALLY!  I mean  hey, it is almost 4 years old now.   Can ya believe it ?!  LOL!  :D

I can put 4 SSD's in a 5 1/4" drive bay, and 4 SSD's in two 3.5" drive bays.  Which gives me 12 mounted SSD's !!!  :D   AND....enough SATA3 ports for 14 SSD's !!

Saturday I got the SATA3 daisy chained 5 port power cable, and the 6 port SATA 3 adapter.  First thing was the 5 SATA3 data cables.
I should  have gotten 2 or 3 of those 5.25" drive bay 4 SSD racks.  Those should be very handy!

The upper back of my desktop, behind the monitors, is a rats nest of cables.  I need to unplug, re-sort and lay in all of them, then at least loosely Velcro wrap them for tidy.  Looks terrible back there now!   OR!  order some PVC raceway!   MMM...maybe...

Archives of all sorts?  Right now, two have various chunks of my Steam games installed to them.  Yes, I play the BIG games from the USB ports!  They do need to be on internal SATA port for speed though.  Hence, the push to reorganize all the SSD's!
I have also been mulling over buying one 4 TB SSD for just my games.  Consolidate all the game files, one drive only!

Okay, externals.  Photography is one.  POSER software only is another.   I bought a lot of that starting with Poser 6.  Then,  DAZ Studio software only is another.  ZBrush software only, ending with the day MAXON forced a hostile buy on Pixelolgic.  ALL those Free Updates sadly came to an end.  Sigh.  Recorded movies and TV shows, another.  Artwork!  And downloaded videos, another.  Mmm seldom used Runtimes?  Bunch of uses!

Got 2 2TB in the office where Lorna now works from home for Colony Brands (https://www.colonybrands.com/)

And I see no more in the future.  Plus I have 4 of the old style Externals plus a WD Cloud external (WD discontinued the cloud service so it's just a Backup External...4TB
Title: Re: McG's Place

I had to sit me down with a tall stack of 5 1/4 half height spinner HD's and figure out  which could still be trusted to use as some sort of backup drive.  The USB3 External SATA drive docks were built with those in mind first.  Which ALSO handle the 2.5" SSD's too.  So, I sadly filed 7 of the old spinners in DOA and file 13'd em.  Sigh.  So much money gone, poof, just like that.  Even the very highest quality one of them, a WD BLACK "Caviar" 640 gig drive died at 5 years and 3 months.  Out of warranty.  Flat out DEAD.  No response.  Gone. File 13.
I have had SSD's in continuous operation now  for 8 years!   Still usable.  Still have 95% of rated life left.  I have been kinda testing other of the SSD's for offline non-powered storage.  So far so good!   They pick up again right where they were unplugged.   Very satisfying to learn.   Life remaining?  99-100%  :o)

My main point being, the spinners (ones with moving parts) ALWAYS will crap out at 3 to 6 years.  Never had even one spinner last longer that was plugged into power.   So, for me now, I buy SSD only.   At this point, nothing out there makes better sense!

I'm thinking McG is going to have a VUE party...... :overthefence: and we'll have to find a way to calm him down... :nurse:

Yep!  It tickles me a bit that I now have a 64 bit newer version of Vue than I have ever used.   I know people that kept their Vue up to date with latest versions.  And when subscriptions started, were very disappointed with what they got.   I did wish I could have gotten all the newest features through Vue 9 or 10, but I do not miss their total revamping the whole version and grade structure that came with the subscription thing.   That goes with ANY software!   Not just Vue.   Poser is getting to be crap now too, and I won't touch P13.
With PP2014 I don't have to be live on the internet to just USE my software!  Everything after that you do.

So far, my PZ3 files from various posers through 11 work great in Vue 9.  Will find a P12 PZ3 and try that next :)
