South African Rice

Enjoy making our Yellow Rice...

Cook Time: 35 mins

A traditional South African recipe, which comes from the great culinary tradition of the Cape Malays in the Cape.

1 cup long grain white rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
3 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup dark seedless raisins
1 tablespoon butter
2 1/2 cups water

In a saucepan, combine the rice, salt, turmeric, sugar, cinnamon, raisins, butter and water. Bring to a boil uncovered.

When it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, or until rice is fluffy and water has been absorbed.

Remove from the heat and fluff with a fork. Keep warm until serving time.

Can't say I have ever done raisins in my rice before but there is a first time for everything.

Been that way forever.  When I was younger my mother use to get Raisin Bran cereal....  My 4 brothers loved it...I hated it and would take the time to pick out ALL of the raisins which delighted my brothers, because they got them.....but pissed off my mother because I would take twice as long to eat breakfast and came close to being late for school

Haha my brother did the same so I ate the raisons he picked out LOL.  Your mom told u too eat them as they are good for you.

Well, after a while I convinced her that bananas were better then raisins   .....
