Adobe Illustrator CS3 Tip - Making "Point Type" Flow Again

I got a call from a freelance client who wanted me to update a very old project. Some of the files I would need to work with were easily six years old. The Illustrator files were saved in version 10. As soon as I tried to open my first file, I realized that I would be faced with some interesting challenges especially with the type. I got an error message warning me that the legacy text in the document needed to be updated. Because I needed to edit some of the text, I chose to press Update and the file opened with no problem.

But when I started to make changes to the existing text, I realized the all of the text had be converted to point type as part of the updating process with each line of text as a separate type object. "Hmm! How will I edit copy that no longer flows from line to line?"  I thought, "This isn't going to be easy. Unless... "

I selected all of the individual text objects with my Selection tool (V) and copied them (Edit>Copy). I switched to the Type tool (T) and clicked and dragged out a new Area Type Frame and pasted the old copy. Cool! It worked. All of the pasted copy flowed again, making editing simple.
