WARNING: SCENES OF DRUG USE AND SUGGESTIVE INNUENDO...NOT FOR KIDS
This movie is about four generations of a Russian Jewish immigrant family of musicians whose careers parallel the history of American popular music in the 20th century. Its time frame begins in the 1890's and culminates in the 1970's, showcasing the progression of music over time, as each generation struggles to become a entertainer, while dealing with real life problems such as poverty, war, drugs and other struggles one can face in life.
The soundtrack is amazing with songs by Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Doors, George Gershwin, The Mamas & the Papas, Herbie Hancock, Lou Reed and Louis Prima.
A large part of the film was made with rotoscoping, a process where live actors are filmed and the footage used for animators to draw over. The film also uses a variety of other mixed media including water colors, computer graphics, live-action shots, and archival footageThe way they use art styles and music in this movie is something to behold, a trip down memory lane, both visually and by sound. The dialogue was great, with emphasis on the language and accents of the people and the times. The stories of the individuals in this family are well done and some can pull at the heartstrings.I highly recommend this movie to everyone and you wont' be disappointed.
