crappy cleaner: warning!
« on: September 10, 2018, 11:11:42 AM »
In the beginning of the afternoon, when I opened my Task Manager like each day with Windows 10 (to check what is working, in case it plays tricks  :sure: ) I was surprise to see CCleaner and CCleaner Emergency Update.
Well last time I used CCleaner was maybe 1 week ago. All the rest of time it's not launching with computer, it simply waits for I launch it manually.

Then, during the afternoon computer was more crazy, until the point where I had to put the fan even when it was on battery - very rare cases, and we haven't heat wave in homes today.
My Firefox, even when I put empty tabs, was crazy, jumping at 60% of processor. So because of that weird behavior  :whatthe: I opened CCleaner and used it.
But at the end, no change for the computer, it was always crazy.

And suddenly, I saw the version of CCleaner: 5.46.xxx (I don't remember the last numbers). And an idea came to me : TL (at least I think it was him) talked to CCleaner recently with an article on How To Geek.
Like I have always the link ( Look Here ) I checked. And it was that!
I don't remember my version of CCleaner on W10, but it was maximum 5.42. I removed since the beginning the possibility for CCleaner to update alone. Yet sometimes it was able to tell me "a new version is available, do you want to update?"  :whuaat: Of course, never, specially after the warning on the 5.45 version.
BUT today CCleaner did the update when I came on Internet. It decided alone!

I had a moment ago also my mother at phone, and she had the same joke with CCleaner. She removed also the possibility for updates. Yet today she had the update which was made alone.

So CCleaner is removed from her computer, and mine also. And next time I open my W8.1, first thing I'll do will be to removed that crappy stuff.
Since when I authorized them to force an update on my computer? To take the power on the rest?

So if you have CCleaner, you are warned!

Thanks for the warning. I don't use CCleaner but I had another "free" program that was really nice but it updated and the new feature was advertisements - uninstalled!!! :phfft:

I don't allow any program to access the internet unless I want it to, there should be an option in preferences for that, and I have never had a problem.

Justly I forbade to CCleaner the auto update (no ticked case) in options, but yesterday it decided to update alone

It's quite possible I have no problems because I have not upgraded in 2 years, so it's an older version.

I was out of web just after midday so I profited to remove CCleaner of my W8.1 too. Then I went in the Programs folder, to remove what stays in a CCleaner folder.
And the computer refused to remove, pretending the CCupdate inside the folder was working  :explode: Ok, I looked in the Task Manager... to discover that whence I removed CCleaner from my programs, the CCupdate decided to try to find an update on the web, even when I wasn't on the web
I stopped the thing in Task Manager and it went immediately to :dustbin:

It's possible your old CCleaner protects you  But I read a bit on CCleaner and Piriform yesterday. To discover that Piriform was bought by Avast last year. And guess what is my antivirus? I think I found how the update was forced finally

I won't touch Avast. I used it many many years ago and back then it was a great program, did what it was suppose to and no garbage with it, then it changed, suddenly I started having problems and it was not doing it's job so effectively, so I removed it.Unfortunately that is a problem with most programs, great when they start out but their ego tips them into the garbage bin.
