Definitely something that Luffie and Kianna should sit down and read together.

I read the first two and granted not much new for me just a different way of doing things. She makes folders within the base Poser runtime to find things easily and then move everything there. The problem with that is when you only have one runtime and you load it up with all of the product that we have a tendency to buy. It now makes Poser load slowly, due to the size of the file. If I did something like that I would have a runtime that weighs 93 GB and with that large of a runtime it would take Poser forever to load. Loading external runtimes broke down by character or whatever term one uses enables Poser to load so much quicker.

Will read the others later to see what might be in them

yup I thought so too and they must have been written prior to external runtimes.

we need a tut for external runtimes and why they are needed.

The explanation for why is in the previous post as to how to create an external runtime and how to set them up I will write something up over the next day or so and post it in here.

that would be perfect to have. can't wait to see your procedure and post for external runtimes...then we'll have one for the beginners with 1 runtime and the second thread for the external ways.

I would also love to see how others have their poser settings set up for their art rendering...someday.

Correct due to the nature if the 4th generation figures you have to load them into the default runtime but after that is is our choice as to how we organize the rest.

I tell you what......If you guys can get this set up so it's in English and even I can understand it......I'll spend a weekend "playing" to see how far I get.....

My biggest problem is the "Organizing" what I have and how to organize it.

Be very careful on Tutorial 101C-1 as they indicate that you should not install the uninstaller.
They state that the uninstaller is for DAZ Studio not Poser.

Yet when you scroll down you see that they are installing the file in DAZ Studio.

Therefore if you are installing in DAZ and the uninstaller is for DAZ only then surely you would install the uninstaller instead of selecting the "no" radio button.

I install the uninstaller and I have used it with no difficulty within Poser. As mentioned I do not use DAZ so can not advise as to anything to do with its operation.

So take this one with a grain of salt.

Everyone's computer set up will be different so I advise be careful while setting the preferences in Poser at one point they say if you have memory issues do not select a particular setting. However while I am looking at these setting that they indicate you should select and keeping the fact that all might not have large amounts of memory I take issue with the settings.

First why would you need 100 undo levels, if you want to suck up your memory go ahead. I use a setting of 20

Second maximum cached renders why would you need 10 again if you want to suck up your memory resources go ahead. I use a setting of 2

If you have a multi-core processor (number of threads) remember to select the number of cores you have on that tab also do select the "separate process" radio button.

One other thing that I recommend is that once you get your stage set up the way you want it with all of your selections set, on the very first tab in the general preferences "Document" make certain that first you select "Launch to preferred state" radio button. Then click on the button "Set Preferred State"

This way all of your hard work to set it up to your liking will not vanish and it will open up to your setting instead of the factory defaults.

well she did mention that they were written awhile ago so if we could get some newer ones for Poser 6+ (i think hers were geared towards P5 --- then that would be grand to have for our site members, especially those that are just starting out.

No clue if Poser Pro is set up like P6+ either
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: Jherrith on June 16, 2011, 07:11:29 PM
I use Poser 7 and do not remember much of how Poser 6 is set up I believe it is similar but can not swear to it.

I believe the early versions of Poser Pro are similar as I recall that I typically have to select the PP version of a product for it to work in either Poser 6 or Poser 7.

Now Poser 8 is another story as when you try to load an item made with it or Poser 2010 it gives you an error message saying that it is made with a newer version of Poser and it will try to read it.

I can include additional scribblings indicating the 411 on how I have Poser 7 set up on my system and what settings I use if interested.

I will also be continuing my dissertation on external runtimes

As most of you know, I'm really just starting out using my poser (I have both Poser 8 and poser 2010) and really need all the help I can get....starting with the organization piece....with a runtime of well over 50gig...I need some serious help...then to be able to set up separately for testing and my own working folders...I need SERIOUS help in this area.
I want to set it up so that I can use it for both DAZ and Poser, until I get more comfortable using poser to do my textures and stuff....which in and of its self is a huge pain....don't know whether I should run 2 separate runtime structures to accommodate this or what to do here.
Any help/advice would be greatly appriciated...and yes, I will be checking out the links, but nice to know that there are some things there to watch out for :)
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners

it is my understanding that now all zips or exe files for poser have the ds files too...unless they are specific to DS only.

I am in reverse situation OFW, I have and use Poser exclusively...I have DS 4 iinstalled and that is as far as DS has gotten.

I do have my external runtimes set up as People, Buildings, Creatures and testing

people contains all seperate folders in each of the normal runtime folders for mil 4 girls, mil 4 guys, a3 and v3 got jealous and upset about sumpin cause she quit working--I guess cause v4 got used more...lol

I thought that there was a way for ds to see the poser runtimes too but that is as far as i go.
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: OFW on June 16, 2011, 09:18:25 PM
technically, Daz is supposed to read Poser runtime structures as long as you have the directory listed correctly in your preferences...however, what I find more often than not is, Daz doesn't like about 1/4 of the files and just skips them all together, often times leaving huge gaps in certain products.  The other problem that comes up is, if you use Daz's content manager, you end up with multiple copies of the same file if you have both the Daz version and Poser version installed, as with the newer stuff or stuff that comes out with both versions in the zip file.
So the best solution is to try and sort out the Daz from the Poser and run 2 seperate runtime structure settings...but, as I stated, with over 50 gigs of stuff in my poor runtime, by the time I did that, it would be over 100 gigs, and my poor external would be eaten up lol.
Ultimately, with the help of everyone here, hopefully I will be able to ditch Daz all together but until that time, I guess I'll just have to keep working on a solution.
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: Jherrith on June 16, 2011, 09:21:06 PM
Well I only have Poser 7 but most of my thoughts should be usable in version 8 and 2010. Least I would think there would not be too much difference.

I would believe from what I have seen of DAZ is that you need two runtimes as the extension are different then what Poser uses. Some of the newer products tend to install both DAZ and Poser files even if you only install it in Poser.
Annoys me that I have to go back in and delete the unneeded files as it is just junk files on my system. So you might get lucky but I would tend to err on the side of caution and have two separate runtimes.

Next up is I run external runtimes and only keep in the default runtime what I must. In other words the 4th generation figures. Other then that I sort all of my content into individual runtimes per character or type of file. See the other thread in the board for a beginning discussion of the topic.

So although my default runtime within Poser 7 is only 17 GB, my externals weigh in at 75 GB. However with it sorted out as mentioned it is quite easy to find what I want when I want it. Then again since I have rather large HD's (500GB and a 750GB) to start with tis not much of a problem. Plus a TB external. So space is not something I have to worry about at last.

Another tip is to get the free version of P3DO Explorer from Senosoft as it allows you to view Poser files including pz3 files and see what it looks like instead of having to go through each and every folder via Poser to see what the heck Pamopen actually is, it is an outfit by the way. LOL

It is much faster to use P3DO to view the files instead of viewing the files in Poser is the logic.
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: DarkAngel on June 16, 2011, 10:03:01 PM
that is the confusing part alrighty, the installer will install all files/ poser files or daz files. If they choose all then ds and poser files should be in there and that is why DS should see the runtime that is used by poser.

In the beginning there was a place is DS that you could import the Poser runtime into it to view and use the items....but in the beginning that is all any of the DS trials I tried did.

I have high hopes that this one will work actually with everything and not just its own components and also let me see the preview pngs in the runtime folders...lol

So, let me see if I have this straight...only the gen 4 (Michael, Hiro 4, Stephanie 4, Aiko 4, Victoria 4, The Girl 4 and Kids 4) has to be in the default runtime folder?  All the rest can be install elsewhere?  Also, when I installed Poser, it asked for a folder location and I directed it to a folder on my external.  Is this the default or is the default the one that is actually inside the /program files/smith micro/poser 8 (or 2010 as the case may be) folder?

I know these are probably stupid questions, but if I'm going to go through and spend the time to set this up, I want to make sure I understand what I am doing :)

I did read your other post, and have started to set up a new runtime structure...the trick then will be to wade through the multitude of install/zip files I have to figure out what goes where.  I have them sorted, kind of...When I started to install for poser, I also started sorting so hopefully this wont be quite the nightmare...

As for size, I'm at 50 gigs and still don't have everything installed that I have.  Lord only knows how big it will be by the time I am finished LOL...

I did download p3do, tho I think I'm gonna have to spend some time reading about it, because it didn't read the one pz3 file I tried to look at....it told me it was a pz3 but that was all, gave me the generic poser icon.

This is going to be a long process...but hopefully when I get it done I will have  a much better handle on what I have and don't have...

don't hold out to much hope DA....I installed it and after facing yet another nightmare of a "content manager" that did not merge into the system they created (which looks like it would be great, if only) and more than half of the icons missing I said to H*** with it and went back to DS3.  I was so disappointed in it that that was my main reason for deciding it was time to learn how to use poser.
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: DarkAngel on June 16, 2011, 10:45:25 PM
that figures. I have DS3 too but never unpacked it...thought to try 4 but lol now I think I will just stay with poser and hope they start with the rendering that DS has...love the way DS makes them muscles and veins look so real

The Geek at Play videos are fairly simple and easy to follow and seem to be pretty spot on.

The tutorials at Smith Micro are a bit harder to follow if you are a newbie. I read one of them and think that they might have missed the boat slightly but see that it was written for an earlier version so adapt, conquer and overcome.

The book that is referenced is a great volume to have in your library and yes it is in mine, in fact in the bookcase behind where I sit at the computer, I know it shouldn't surprise any here since my house is furnished with mostly bookcases. :thud:

I would suggest that if you buy any number of books at all in a year to get a membership card from Barnes and Nobel and then this way you can save an additional 10% in the store or even greater savings when you order on line. So consider it.

OK starting at the top of the questions

If I understand correctly you have the full program of Poser installed on an external drive?

If it is working like that then cool running, typically one usually installs programs to the main hard drive where the OS is located as sometimes programs look for bits of registry or .dll files. With it being installed on a remote drive means it might take a bit longer to load or find the pieces needed to run the program.
Granted with the way computers run now this may no longer be a problem Not certain, although I will say this with it being on an external you can take it with anywhere and plug in to any other computer and work with Poser there instead of being confined to the house all the time. You can go on vacation and plug it into your laptop and carry on.

The default runtime is the one within Poser itself. So when you installed V4 it will not allow you to install it anywhere else except the default runtime. Which when you open Poser that would be the folder at the very top of the library tab. Directly underneath it there is another "runtime" folder called "downloads".

Any and all other content can be installed into "runtime folders" that you create.

Example on your hard drive create a folder and call it "Poser Runtimes"
Create  a new folder within it and call it "Aiko4"
Now go to your storage folders and find an outfit or any other product for Aiko4 and install it to that newly created folder.
I will not go into detail on the steps of installing unless asked, but the highlights are simple.
When you go to install it it asks for a destination, direct it to your newly created empty folder called Aiko 4 and let it run.
When you go back to it to look at the file structure you will see that when it installed it that it created all of the other needed folders to contain all of the files.
So nothing else to do there except continue to install content.

At some point you are going to run into dialog screens saying that there is already a read me folder or file by the same name. Do not overwrite them. You will have to manually go into your Aiko 4 folder and then rename the file or folder, (I usually give it the name of the product).
While you are in there you might notice several folders all called read me in various spelling formats. What I do at this point is create a Master Read Me folder and I move all of the stray read mes into this folder that way I have all the license and usage documentation for all products in one spot. Another trick that I do is I create one called DAZ Read mes, since they have thumbnails and a html plus a text file for all products. I will move all of them into that one folder to keep them organized.

At some point you are going to get some content that when you install it instead of unzipping to the proper directories it creates a new folder called runtime within your folder. Now what? Well now you have to go into the root structure of the folder find that new runtime folder and click on all the "+" signs until you can see all of the final folders for the product, now move them (drag and drop) to the correct location in the main folder (geometry, character, pose, prop, textures and so forth) and then once you have all the pieces moved then you can leave the read me in that folder, after deleting all of the empty folders and rename the folder it as the product and then move it to your Master read me folder.

As to P3DO you are correct, sorry it will only show a generic icon for a pz3 file. What the cool thing is that in the window to the left of it it gives you the complete run down and location of every item in that pz3 file. That has saved my bacon more then once because of not remembering just exactly what I used in a picture and now I want to use it in another but have no idea as to how to find it. So I open the file in P3DO and then look in the column until I find the name of the item and then I check the path for it and now I can find out where I have it hidden.

LOL  I would lay odds that my "hard copy" library would rival most out there...Not a wall in our house that doesn't have at least 2 bookshelves on it (the tall ones) and most shelves are at least 2 deep :)

OK starting at the top of the questions

If I understand correctly you have the full program of Poser installed on an external drive?
No, Poser it's self is installed on my C drive, but during the installation it asks you for a folder location for the runtime.  So my question was, does this content go into the one on the C drive or the one it asked me for (which is on my external drive) *answered below*

Quote

Actually, if you don't choose the Poser option when you are installing the files, you can install them elsewhere...It's just that Poser doesn't like that...so Just an FYI for anyone else out there who might be reading this...when installing Daz Gen 4 characters, always remember to click the radio button for poser (or the drop down)

But I do have another question here...Often times there are more than one poser options available, none of which are poser 8 or poser 2010, so how do I know which one to choose, or does it matter?

Quote

Yes, I do know how to install files LOL  even the one's that are not structured quite right (the runtime inside the runtime).  However, I find that with "free" content, often times there is not structure when I unzip something and thus I am not sure where to put each file type.  This bit gets really confusing to me.

I can certainly see where that would be helpful

Really another person with a library I am only at about 1500 volumes now. :thud:

Well, didn't know that about Poser 8 so that is quite cool that you can install it's runtime on a different drive.

Haven't ran across an option for specific versions of Poser installs. I usually just see one that says "Poser all files" so I am assuming that if I had a newer version of Poser I would see these other options listed.

Nonetheless I would select the latest version it offers so if it is only offering a Poser 7 version it is still readable by your versions.

When it comes to open folder of material with only file extensions and no folders it do become tricky to say the least. I will start another thread with a listing of what type of file goes where which will enable one to build folders of your own for it and then move it to the correct locations to be able to use said content.
Title: Re: How to set up Poser for beginners
Post by: DarkAngel on June 17, 2011, 01:06:38 PM
I install all things into poser manually except the Mil4 people that are required to go into the main runtime folder located in the Poser fodler.

.cr2 files = character folder
.pz2 = pose folder
.cm2=camera folder
.fc2 = face folder
.hr2= hair folder
.hd2 = hand folder
.lt2 = light folder
.mc6 = materials folder
.pp2 = props
textures go into textures which generally consit of .jpg files

those are how they are named in a Mac but will still give the general idea. If the files are let loose into a folder (some used to be) then you put them into the respective home folder in your runtime with the .obj going into the geometries folder.

some .obj's can be imported thru poser itself but in the really older aips these were sometimes loose to be tossed into the geometries folder as is.

The hardest part for a newbie to remember is that DO NOT transfer the zips geometry folder totally into the runtime or it will overwrite the one in there and all previous stuff is lost. You must open each and every folder to compare files and if there is already a swam folder then keep opening until you see the contents or a folder that is not in your runtime already....then transfer the files

that is the one thing about pc that I grew to love...you can right-click the files and choose copy then go to the destination  folder and right-click to choose paste and there they are....on the mac it is actually drag/drop and hope you get it into the right foler or go fishing...lol

after I get the character into the poser runtime I get her all setup with the injections then put that injected copy into the external runtime.

at one time I was told that when the runtimes get huge to close poser -- when done creating --- with either an empty or a very small runtime so that it doesn't take too long to open next time.

I have a post titled File structure which goes over this topic with a few other things I learned along the way.

The other reason for running external runtimes is that the only runtime Poser is loading when you open it is the default one or which ever one that was open the last time you used it.

So yes it is only loading the last open runtime first and just references or links to the others.
