Title: Issue with shadow when export
Post by: Aelin on January 15, 2019, 10:40:19 AM
I'm  :omg: since days before a problem - probably simple but I can't find a way.

It's a kind of pedestal, part of a project.
3 faces are "sculpted", not the fourth which is plane.

I tried:
- auto-smoth
- choosen my own hardness edges
- no hard edges at all
- I tried several formats like .obj (the one I want) and dae and 3ds.
- I imported and re-exported from Blender (and no guys, I'm not ready to use permanently that program) and Hexagon...
- I used the "clean up" tool, and I see no face with 5 points (which can be source of issues)

The problem persists, no matter what I tried.
First image, it's how the thing appears in the usual mode of Wings3d.
Second picture, with the smooth shading turned on.
Last picture, it's in Daz :thud:

Any idea from what I'm missing? Or did I choose to create a simple thing impossible to do?

To me it looks DAZ is smoothing, I would say make all hard edges and export but sounds like you already did that test. You can manually uncheck smooth on the DAZ surface tab. Another solution I have seen is to make tiny bevels on each edge so there is more geometry in the mesh. Maybe export with triangulation turned on.

If you post the obj I can look at it in DAZ 4.10

This problem is annoying! I think the easiest fix is to turn smoothing off on the surface tab and save it as a material preset. I also tested adding a bevel - select all edges and bevel a small amount - you can see results in the image below.
In addition to getting annoyed I have discovered I don't like modeling and I'm glad other people like you will do it  :Hi5:
I also discovered I don't remember how to do a 3Delight render  :tearlaugh:

Sorry, I look onlynow by here.

I use mainly DS3, and like it's not the pro version I haven't the smooth option - or it never appeared in the different tabs (which is possible :hypno: ).
But the problem is seen in Hexagon too for example. And there I even don't remember if we have a hardness option :tearlaugh:

I was afraid to have to change something on the structure of 'pedestal' like I uvmapped it. But no choice  Thank you, I'll look it this afternoon.
I didn't think to bevel every edge like until now my experience (and the Urban modelization tutorial) show me than a beveled object needs at least few hard edges :lostme: I guess every modelization asks to question everything we know :lostme:

When what you need is missing but you need quickly, sometimes you haven't choice but modelize yourself :winks:
3dlight renders are my favorites like the system of comp doesn't like too much the rest :tearlaugh:

The all bevel didn't worked, there was always an issue this time around the 'long' diagonals on the vertical faces - it was like if they were hardest than the rest of the pedestal.
So those diagonals and the little in the 'frame' aren't beveled at the end. And to keep the shadows in Daz (or the idea you were looking relief was missing) I was forced to add hard shape to the tiny diagonals and the 'inside' of frame.
Also hard edges on the top face of the pedestal.

There is always a tiny imperfection in Daz, but it's really better now  :ty2:
The next step is the new UV map.

Smooth option should be there, almost certain I remember it in DS3 - but sounds like hard edges are a solution too.

Sorry bevel all did not work - My test model is very simple.
Have fun and good luck Aelin!

But bevel all was a good idea which brought toward the final solution

Mind and eyes are back from... I don't know where :tearlaugh:
I finally saw the "smooth" part in DS3 textures - I'm working on something else than pedestal now (I'm lazy with textures for now  )
The smooth works for a scene, but if I save the prop with a change in smoothing it's not working when I load the prop again.

So the other way I found is to bring .obj in several cutted parts, check if their shadows are correct inside Daz, then 'glue' them together when I save the prop in DS3.
Alas, time I find that way, I had already uvmapped my object and had to redo the uvmap from the beginning

DS has a very good export. File-Export supports  obj and DS will create UVs. Not sure where the UVs goes when you save as a prop lol.
