Interesting, in the contest gallery I see covers with a barcode on. Where I live the books have the barcode on the backcover and not on the front cover.

In France, codebars of comics are on the front cover, either in the bottom right corner, or on the left side (if so, turned vertically, not horizontally). It's the same for magazines.
For the books, they are always on the back cover.

I have also 4 US comics at home, given by one of my aunts years ago. The codebars are all at the bottom left on the cover (2 vertically posed, 2 horizontal).

I think codebar is only 40 years old or something like that Mary. So not in the 60's, nor in 70's.

I forgot to tell also about our "bandes-dessinées". Following the title, it's different for the codebar.
"Asterix" bd have a codebar on the back cover.
"Tintin" don't have a codebar. In place, it's a label.

We have 2 different versions of these comic books, ones with a hard cover and others with a soft cover but thicker as a magazine. Both have the bar code on the back cover.
