CRITTERS
« on: June 08, 2020, 11:44:56 AM »
If you hear scratching noises in your Attic at night, you can be sure that some kind of critter is living there. Critter is an informal word for any living creature, from a wolf to a spider.

In this thread we can discuss different critters, concerning their behavior, where they live, and other interesting things about them. We can also share photos, videos, and articles we find concerning specific critters.

Members are invited to join in the discussions here to relate their own experiences with critters, and what they know or think about them. For those of us that get the heebee-jeebees seeing pictures or videos of certain critters, please know we respect your right not to participate, but if you can or want to get around your phobias, you are also welcome here. We want to see what you have to say also.

To all members, we ask that you treat each other with the same respect you use in any other thread here.

Enjoy the thread!

Was looking for a good Jumping Spider Mating Dance video to share here but my search skills seem to still be pretty bad. You got any good ones you know of, McG?

I like spiders I have at least 3 or 4 living in my house. When Summer rolls around I have no worries of ants, flys, or other little pests. I also get some pest assistance from the many little lizards that live in the bushes around the apartments.

cool image dll57!

Those are SUCH tiny fangs sticking out of those big bad chelicerae!   ;o)

Just 3 or 4?   Hmm.   When I see one spider, I multiply x 10.   I see 5, I multiply x 10 still.   There are always more around than we see out in public.    I saw 3 different species of ants headed to the cats food bowl.   I also saw these super quick little black specks darting around.   In and out among those ants.  Who suddenly stop moving.    Then the specks go back and feed, then they are off again.   Babies!   Jumping spider hatchlings!   That's a rare sight I mean to say!  I knew they'd be tiny, but never imagined how fast they were.  Not even!   LOL!   As its been said many times:  Nature Finds A Way!

Thank you McG
The chelicerae in most spiders are about 1/12 the size of the spider and the fangs about the size of a hypodermic needle. They may be hallow filled with venom. If they were to long the little guy or gal may not be able to hold their head up.
I am sure there are many more than 3 or 4 about but as I live in a very large apartment complex they have a lot of home choices.

So  then some spiders are more fang-led than others!   LOL!    The Argiope and (most) Salticidae have fangs long enough they are folded against the cephalo-thorax, between the leg roots.   This I say as an observation, not as a 'fact'.
this is one I've been calling an Argiope since 2007 when I took these photos.   It's a big spider, whole body an inch long.  Its web stretched over 15' wide and 8' high, between the side of the house and the property line cyclone fence.   I've read these put their web up fresh every morning.   They eat their old web as they are cutting it down.   Very industrious creatures!   This one really didn't want to be disturbed.  Shame on me!
