Rough Wood Text tutorial
« on: April 01, 2018, 01:13:33 AM »
I like David Brinnen's tutorials and here I'm using some tips from him to create a rough wood looking text object in Wings 3D.
The font used is important, it is Chiller and is a Microsoft Font so should be standard on Windows PCs, so I hope you have it and can follow along.

This is what we are creating.

The Steps are easy: First create the text and I deleted the extra marks, select them and use delete key.

Next select one width edge, pressing I key will select them all. Cut the width in half - by pressing 2 key, then c key.

Now we need to select the loops on each letter, select one edge on each letter and press L key.
With the loops selected use Move - Normal to create a slight bump-out on the width of the letters.

Before continuing we need to UV map, there are already some hard edges on the faces of the letters (the orange lines) - so we just need to add a few on the width of the letters. This will make mapping easy because the UV mapper will automatically cut hard edges. The first figure shows where I added the hard edges, it is not so important to put them in the same places, just make sure each letters has some cuts along the width. The W and G needs more cuts and remember to put one cut in the hole of the G. Start by selecting the edges to make hard and then right click and select Hardness - Hard.

Then open the UV mapper and use Project Normal.

After UV mapping the object will have the UV texture image, I removed it because it is annoying and changed the texture to blue. For this object I don't want any smoothing so select all edges and make them hard.

For the next step we need to go to point mode, also press the tab key to enable shading, this will help in visualizing the deformation we will be adding.
Right Click - Select Deform - Crumple - Random. I just used a little deformation for the rough wood effect - and it is done!

Just export as an object. In the render it I used a bamboo wood texture.

Hope this was useful - thanks for looking!

Text objects are something I don't normally think about using - maybe I will now
