How to parent
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:57:14 PM »
To parent props

1. Situate your items where you want them to be in your render.

2. Select a the prop you want to parent {parent means to "attach" it to another item so when it moves the prop does too} by clicking on the prop or selecting it from the drop down menu.

3. Go to the top drop down menu=>Object=>Change Parent to a box will appear for you to select what you want to parent it to.

4. Select the item you want to parent it to from the list by clicking once on it [sometimes you will see a small + next to the name--select the item then click the plus. When selected then you click OK.

To parent a figure to something

If you want to parent something to a figure, you want to parent it the the part of the figure you want it to follow. for instance, parenting a glass to the hand that is holding it.

1. Go to the top drop down menu=>Figure=>Set Figure Parent
a box will appear for you to select what you want to parent it to.

You have to parent the whole figure to one object. If you have a figure riding a horse, you can't parent the person's hip to the saddle (or to the animal's chest) and the hand to the reins.

To parent a lot of things, it is easier to use the Hierarchy Editor which is found under Window of the top drop down menu.

Move the item you want to parent (aka the child) into the same line as the thing you want to be the parent. Usually it will appear under the parent, indented to the right.

box
ball

If parenting a prop to part of a figure,  a glass to the right hand, all of the fingers of that hand will be between "the Right Hand" and "Glass".

Nice short cut wasn't aware that one could "drag" objects to parent them. Much faster than going through the drop down every time

Too late Kianna heard you wanted to be a parent with her

well you drag it to where you want it to be set then you still have to  go to the main menu to set the parent.

or you can use the properties window too.
