Those have been issues all the way back to the founding of the US, yet school shootings were not this commonplace for most of our history. It's a combination of the types of weapons that have been made available to the public and the massive loopholes in regulations on who can buy them that were carved out by lobbyist for gun manufacturers. TBH, most of our problems are due to the massive influence moneyed interests have over our political process. It's gotten to the point that their needs and desires are met to the exclusion of everything and everyone else, especially the vast majority of the voting public. In this case, even children are just seen as mere casualties in pursuit of higher quarterly returns.

Yes, I realize how sick that statement is, but that's what our society is...sick. We've been sold on the absurd idea that corporate profits should be valued over our own safety and wellbeing, in order to "protect jobs". The truth is, that's rarely true. They'd just as well sack us and ship those jobs oversees if they could, as many other industries had done decades ago.

This is but one symptom of something deep and disturbingly wrong with society today. Where are the focus of our leaders and the people charged with protecting these children, and why has it been taken off the ball when it comes to protecting the futures most valuable assets?
