That is highly annoying and yes it has happened previously and trying to replace those discs can sometimes be problematic.

So the real question is what now?

Go to backing up the entire collection onto computer drives, mechanical, SSD, thumb drives ... what

I install radio equipment, not repair home electronics

I have been cleaning it about once a day as that seems to give the best results

I have wiped the disc down with the anti static and smudge fabric

And this is a disc I have had for years and it has always played previously for me

The computer not recognizing one of the players is new and I have not yet investigated that quirk.

How old is the DVD?  I've had many fail due to constant playing and got replacements for a lot less then I got the original for LOL.  Time makes many things cheaper.  If it's not that old, then I don't know what to tell you.  Try looking HERE

But then again....if it's that old, then maybe the player doesn't recognize the codexx

If it didn't recognize the codex I would first think that it would not play at all, however it plays the first three episodes flawlessly as mentioned. It hangs up on episode number four. Yes, it is an older DVD and I have played it multiple times over the years I have owned it.

In retrospect I do not remember the last time I played it so I can not say if I have not already had this problem and had forgotten about it or not, the problem is finding replacements, sometime they are reasonably priced, other time it is "you have got to be kidding me"

This one is still in the reasonable range.

Plus remember I do not watch mainstream or normal for lack of a better word media. This particular one is a Dr. Who episode.

My real question is how to preserve them going forward, do I make a back up on a dedicated hard drive, thumb drive in addition to having a separate disc

I still have 5 inch floppy discs with data on them but nothing reads them anymore.
Some say to make everything digital and archive everything to Glass Archive Discs Which are even more expensive!  :whatthe:

Will Paper books Will still be around after Everything is digital and will it still be trust worthy with all the Revisionist who hate history or make their own!

Well, that is going to add up quick, considering the number of discs in the Dr. Who collection. :iminnocent:

Ha!  You guys already offered the same things I would.  Especially those Verbatim Archival GOLD DVD's.  Years ago I bought two 100 count spindles of Verbatim DVD's and am still using them.   They seem to be made of the better materials than the other brands.   The BluRay 25 gig disks I bought are also Verbatim, and definitely made of better stuff than any DVD I have ever seen.   Since I am using them FOR archival purpose, I didn't mind the cost so much.   These should definitely outlast ME!
J, check your DVD.  It has the paint or coating on top, right?  One ridiculously tiny scratch and you will miss seeing some THING that was recorded there on the bottom of that paint job.   Happened to mine all the time, when the kids brought them back.   And said "It quit working Dad, dunno why but it just did!" and it'd be covered in scratches, both sides.  Sigh.   I quit loaning my movies out.   Not a single problem since.but as often as you watch your shows man, it COULD happen, yaknow?
