...I read on that NATO may be considering an Article 5 response to global cyber terrorist attacks like the one that just occurred.

I see that....we'll see how well all will play together before getting any hopes up....

..yeah whne I purchased a notebook years ago it came with McAffee.  A got hit by a n annoying redirect virus that piggybacked during an MS auto update which slipped right through. The virus would randomly redirect legit searches I Would make to porn sites (a real embarrassment when at a cafe).  Finally rooted it out with the help of several third party utilities and the replaced McAffee with another much better AV utility that businesses use. I also have the same firewall setup on my workstation which even though it isn't connected to the Net, still receives updates I download to the notebook then transfer to it by secure USB stick.

That would not be the only thing I'd scare to death! It's really bad when you're scared of your own reflection! LOL
DAZ Studio, Bryce, Poser, Wings 3D, Howler, Blender, PSP, Hexagon, MSO PowerPoint & Word, just a few of the programs I use.

That's one of the reason I only have small mirrors at my place...just big enough to shave...that's scary enough :tearlaugh: :tearlaugh:

When I first started with them I had problems but after working with them and becoming a beta tester I had very few problems.   Use to be a son of a gun getting the updates...but that's fixed now also.  A lot of times folks don't take the time to remove ALL PARTS of the previous Virus program they had on their computer and that causes "Open Doors" even with the best Virus protection.  As I said...Not crazy over their new LIVE....It seemed to work great in Beta Testing but I'm thinking they disregarded some of the suggestions made.  So I'm hunting.

If anyone has suggestions or views on what programs they like best...throw them at me....All will be welcomed.

It is behooving upon you however; to actually hold those powers that be to the fire and demand they get with the program. If your hospital doesn't work, and you pay for medical; then boycott that hospital in the future and let them know why. If you power grid has shut down don't blame the ransomware. Blame your utility\govt. as the case may be for an inability to secure the grid. Bank machine not working. Transfer your account to another bank and tell your current institution why. You have no faith in their ability to secure their services or your cash\mortgage or whatever services you use.

Everything is connected to everything else. Tech runs at a pace beyond that of most users. No matter what level they operate at. If the basics in our modern society cannot be secured maybe we should be paying more attention to the cause. Not the symptoms.

Nailed it. Very well said, PDG.

Additionally, these sorts of things are why we are also supposed to keep multiple backups of our own data. I know I do. I've had catastrophic HD failures before, only to find out that one of my backup HDs had also bricked itself... to the rescue was my second backup... LOL.

Nothing is backed up unless it's saved in three different places. ;) At least not nowadays anyhow.

As for viruses like this. Meh. Black Hats will do as they will do, White Hats will do as they will do to try and counter it. It's all over my head... I just keep everything as up to date as I can, run my firewalls and antivirus, and back things up in multiple different places and hope for the best, basically. I have my main HD, my internal HD, and then multiple "backup" HD's. All but the one internal are USB externals. I scan them periodically for scumware and viruses as well. I do everything I know to do to be responsible with it.

We can't avoid 100% everything there is, and there is always that slim chance that something will align in the cosmos somewhere and you lose ALL your HD's at the same time of course...

Scream and rant and rave and then either move on or give up at that point I suppose...

But at least if you have the extra backups, you've made a try at being responsible with your data. I won't touch Norton or Macafee if you PAID me to use their crapware... they're just as bad as a virus on their own. I've been with Avast for about 15 years now. Have only ever had one virus sneak through, and that was my own fault. LOL They've had a good track record for me, and the price is right as they say, too. ;)

All we can really do is try to be responsible with our data. There is no such thing as privacy anymore, and there is no such thing as a guarantee of successfully backed up data. That which cannot be printed out in hard copy/paper, cannot achieve a 100% guarantee of being safe, period.... full stop. But we can still take measures to minimize how much damage can be done to our files.

Anyway. I think these global-wide attacks are far more than some Black Hat sitting in his room somewhere deciding he's going to go after some specific bank or service. That's not a big enough fish to fry for creating something to attack world-wide. World-wide global attacks smack of much bigger beginnings to me.

But then that's just me, and I'm supposedly a tin-foil hat wearing paranoid libbie. ;)

I use a combination of Sophos (which industry uses) and Symantec the latter which has become a lot more efficient and less of a resource hog than it was years ago. I also use  CCLeaner and Malwere Bytes.
