The Turning Point
|
Eve was reading the terms and conditions which the shop sets for repairing hydraulic leaks while Albany and the mechanic discussed recent developments on the Station. The shop dog was quite interested in Eve, his pulsing eyes fixed on her.
Suddenly, Eve remembered her shopping bag that she had left at the head of the alley and said so.
Henry, the mechanic, said, "12-157 will get it for you. Do those conditions look OK?"
12-157 trotted out the open workshop door, then galloped up the alley, grabbed the bag and raced back, dropping it at Eve's feet.
As Eve nodded in agreement to Henry's question, he said, "Well, then that's settled. Go out the rear door, down the steps to the hanger level, then right to the end of the walkway and through the door. Show them where the leak is and we'll get it fixed."
"Why are you grinning, Albany?" asked Eve, embarrassed that she needed a repair and thinking that Albany was laughing at her.
"You know your application for a transfer? I'd come to tell you about it when you started arguing with me, demanding to go groundside. You know that the Station mechanics can take care of leaks just fine."
Eve stared in stunned silence. After a while she asked "Tell me what?"
