That too is difficult to place in the hanging wall, like Rivendell was created during the Second Age, when Sauron made the war against the Elves - when he finally had forged his ring to rule everything.
Rivendell kept a role in the following of the Middle Earth history, specially in The Hobbit and in Lord of the Rings.

I saw a photo once of a valley, somewhere in Switzerland. Pretty the same angle. The shape of Rivendell valley is exactly the same. It's a place that Tolkien visited and visibly he kept in mind for his books.
