Tolkien's drawing is less colored than the tapestry. In a way, the tapestry is in the same idea than what did Peter Jackson in "The Hobbit" for Mirkwood - psychedelic trees.
The red star is Carnil. It's a star made by the goddess Elbereth (one of the names for Manwe's wife) to defy Morgoth. She is the more loved by the Elves, because they are born under the stars and it was the first light they knew.
