One Curse of a Hybrid
|
I never saw my mother's face. Richard said she was beautiful. But I look too much like him to have any clue what she might have looked like. I knew Richard was my father and that I was a Hybrid, but no one else was to know these things. He passed me off as a 'dear ward' of his late brother. I had a 'nanny' who was one of the daughters of the Shoshone chieftan. She was the Tribe's surety to Richard. So, I guess it made sense we went together. She's Nenah, my brother Djinn's mother. So I sort of have that motherly side that I greatly respect. Nenah is very wise. My sisters had their own inimitable ways of teaching me the proper way to treat ladies. They were tough girls!
I spent my early life as a Vampire. Then as we had moved deeper West and finally into the Northwestern Native lands, it was easier and easier to slip into Wolf form without much hassle. The Natives were Were's too. When Richard finally made a treaty with 'his Weres' and brought them all into the combined fold, I agreed to live amongst them as a surety of our alliance and an envoy between the two. I found I prefered the Wolf form to the Vampire one. I guess that was my mother dominating those genes.
Finally, I was able to just be myself but I still couldn't go around talking about it. None of the Were's would betray me, but there were Vampires who would for a pretty bounty split with any assassin with the cajones to take me out.
It's rather like being a gun-slinger of great repute in the Old West. There was always and automatically a target on your back if you were a known Hybrid. Needless to say, I mostly stayed up north. If I ever called on Seth or Eli to help me out with something down South, they always would. I did the same for them in the North. Afterall, the Black Sun Clan has to stick together, or we're nothing.
