Pharaoh's last barge ride
|
After the weeks of preparation and mummification of the dead Pharaoh at the royal mortuary in Thebes, it is finally time to load his body and the sarcophagus onto the royal barge and take him up river to the tomb that was prepared for him. The tomb is loaded with all of the things the pharaoh will need with him in the afterlife, including the disassembly and reassembly of his royal barge. After the priests have performed the opening of the mouth ceremony, the tomb is sealed. In a few rare cases, the very people who were building the tomb and helped the priests with the burial were killed to prevent them telling anyone where the royal tomb is located, but in most cases the tombs were robbed anyway at some point in the ancient past.
