I seem to have lost the post on how to remove those nasty little white areas from around an image..to make it later with a transparent background.

Could you please put the instructions here so I may find them easier???

Is this the trick you seek.

Removing Edge Fringe When Collaging

Any time you're creating a collage, you'll eventually add an image that has little white pixels around the edges of your object. Here's a tip for getting rid of that "fringe." Go under the Layer menu, under Matting, and choose Defringe. Try the default setting of 1 pixel and click OK. What this does (here's the techno speak) is replace the edge pixels with a combination of the pixel colors in your object and the colors in the background (whew, that hurt). That usually does the trick. If it doesn't, Undo it, then try a 2- or 3-pixel Defringe.

I am still looking through my collection of tips but this is the first one that sounds about right

Another concept although i think the above one is what you seek

Refine Edge

Although there are many tools that will create exact selections, Adobe does step up the game a little with Refine Edge (Select>Refine Edge). With the Refine Edge feature, you have the ability to modify your selection using a set of sliders and preview your output on different color backgrounds. Use the F key in the dialog to cycle through the preview options.
"But who is stronger, truly, I asked myself, he who continues to wound and bleed himself to please others, or he who refuses any longer to do so?"

It will work in PS 7 and CS_2

another way to remove those unwanted " white " or light lines  is .. selct the obj with magic wand ... go selec -> modify ->Expand

depends on the resolution of youre image , type in 1 or 2 px and adjust that border   with   curves and levels .

This technique is also good if you have to smooth the edges of  object  , so you not gonna paint into the object by accident and you can smooth only a very fine line arround ..
