Pardon me for being dim but one would use these how; in ones artwork ... they do look nice but when it comes to using Photoshop to its fullest I am a babe in the cradle and I so would love to learn more and I am uncertain how to use these effectively

Thank you

:ty: to feed externals of TL and all others :psycho:

J, for asl files, they are styles. I have a french Photoshop, but perhaps screen captures can help you to undertsand where find their use.
With the arrow, you choose to load those you wish.
Have you ever use styles? If not, the style is applied to the selected zone.
And you can add or remove some effects in options of the layer.

It's all i know on styles and asl files.

ah, that's not a problem - everybody begins with small steps and the experience comes with learning by doing. now, then a small tutorial about the styles menu. in my eyes one of the greatest tools in photoshop because you have hundreds of settings to change the look from parts or the completely image. a style is at last a collection of settings you have create and want to store them for longer time.

styles loading:
extract the archive and store the .asl file at best on a external drive, make a folder for all your resources because during the years you can collect some gigabytes from this stuff. then open photoshop and in the right panel you should see a window named "styles" if not, go to the main menu "Window" and mark the "styles" menu and now it should be visible.
in the menu you see on the right side a small symbol with 4 small lines and a arrow > click on this symbol and select from the drop down menu "replace styles" (if needed save your actually styles also in your new resources folder) > then browse to the extracted .asl file and open this > now photoshop will load this file and you can see all new styles in the window. you can also set in the right drop down menu "large thumbnail" to view the styles in better quality. that's all for loading.

using styles:
make first a new image, on the right panel make a double click on the small layer preview and this will unlock the image from the background - this is important because otherwise styles do not working. now comes the easy part: simply click on one style and your image will change his look exactly to the settings from the style. you can also mark a area from your image, press "STRG + J" > this create a new layer only from the marked part of your image and apply a other style > and so on and one.
and remember, the thickness from the style boarder depends on your resolution (DPI ratio) from your image: small DPI (72) bring you small edges and high resolution (300 DPI) result in big edges. you can also edit them in the styles menu.

the advanced part is now the styles menu: > double click again on the small preview of your image in the right panel and the style menu will pop up. to learn this menu you must try simply every setting, change them and look what this change on your image - you will be surprised what you can make for beautiful effects. for example: with "Pattern Overlay" you can use any picture to give your image a other background or texture (for textures the images should be marked as "seamless") there is a small window and on the right edge is a small arrow > click on them and your loaded pattern menu pop up > there is top right a small gear and this open also a drop down menu and there you can select "Load Pattern" and now you can load any image and photoshop store this as new pattern for you. you can create your own pattern by opening or creating a new picture > go to the top main menu > select "Edit" and scroll down to "Define Pattern" and this will photoshop also store as your new pattern.
and this is only one function from the style menu, the other ones you can simply explore by yourself - but to learn all settings you will need some time. I hope you can follow this, if not please always ask for more information.

best wishes, llexandro
