Title: Use of downloaded Images...
Post by: Scouseaphrenia on August 07, 2018, 08:19:54 AM
or downloaded anything for that matter... Ive found some images I want to use as tattoos and as far as possible Ive tried to search for free or CC images. If I  then use a figure (e.g. genesis 3, that Ive "tattoed") in a webcomic or other display would that infringe the rights of the original artist? Ive tried looking up fair use and copyright etc which is complicated and now my brain hurts...
any suggestions gratefully received...

for now im off to see K... she said she will straightne my head out with this gadget she calls a "mangle..."

If they are unique tattoos, kind of masterpiece, I have tendency to say you have few chance to use them.
If they are more tribal, well we see a lot of tribal tattoos. Could be ok to use them.

Have you tried to search the usage right by Google Image?

The biggest problem with finding the usage rights for a image is first locating the original artist, as there are so many who claim rights that are not theirs. You would not believe how many times I came across an image that has five or more people laying claim to it and I am left wondering who is the original owner. It's the main reason I first got into 3D graphics, back when I was creating signatures and everyone was copyrighting their work and you had to pay to use them. There were so many fights about copyright I lost interest in doing tags.

If the use was for personal items then it would be fine to use them but commercial use (selling the art or comics) is totally different. When going to the web and looking up images for tats there should be a site also shown when you enlarge the image and that sometimes will tell you if it is with an owner or not.

of course if you take the tat and change it (not just by adding a color or dots) but manipulating it then that outcome is your own...I do think so anyway cause then it is like a merchant resource that you use to make a skin then enhance it with other things.

Best thing is to try to find the creator. Posting the image in a thread would help with eyeballs too.

Tricky... perhaps the answer is find tuts on making my own or maybe someone who can do it and will trade for something they want...
a freebie trading site sounds like a good idea...

Yup, you can post your idea of what you need then ask for someone to trade for you to use personal or commercial then find out what they want to trade for.

The trading part could be handle via the pm or emails. We could even announcee it so the masses would all see it.

sounds like an idea for a new forum... and swap requests with the required permissions. As you say much easier than trying to track down originals owners and you get what want you without excessive searching... which I waste a lot of time doing...

Actually you can draw those tribal one's yourself and then they are yours to use as you see fit since some of them are basically Celtic symbols that are centuries old and have no copyright. These websites have a list of ancient Celtic symbols. Seeing as they are so old, so long as you are drawing them yourself, they are yours to use.

There is also the Viking and Norse symbols of which you will find similarities to Celtic.

You might want to look up native symbols as well as they are popular, especially the south american variety.

Ya the pages are not gone, they just don't move well with links.  I found these by googling and not google images as that can lead you astray.  Just google the culture symbols and include the work ancient, should give you that cultures original ancient symbols to draw yourself.
