Subsurface Scattering Tutorial for P-9, PP2012 and up

I came across this on FB and wanted to share it with you. I've not read through it yet but people I trust say it's a good one!

The tutorial is on Deviant Art. It's a .pdf that you download by clicking the "Download" button to the right of the image there. Then save to your machine and read as you will :)

I suck at getting things like that to work so hopefully this one will be something I can grasp and make sense of and maybe get decent results.

You're welcome!

Was reading a little this morning. So far it's well written and presented but will try it out later in the day. It's all based on Bagginsbill's collected tutorials (all in one place), so it should be good. It gets into the render settings and lighting too, so should be fairly thorough.

So, I've been playing with this tutorial and the render settings and lights. I made my M4 character Clay an SSS skin to try it out. I didn't put the SSS shaders on his eyebrows or lashes. The Tutorial was very easy to follow and the results were good - if you like SSS. I personally am not all that chuffed with it as far as the skin goes. I DO like the way the eyes look though. I use RSS Skins (Real Skin Shader). To me it looks more realistic. But anyway, just my opinion.

I also tried the Tutorial Render settings using the IDL light. Render time is pretty long with that, because first it calculates the IDL, then it calculates the SSS, and then it renders. I'm sure if I put his usual hair on him, it would have taken a very, very long time.

So, then I tried my SSS Render settings, which (if memory serves) I got off of an RDNA thread. I might have tweaked them a bit - don't remember. These settings don't use IDL and the bucket size is a lot smaller but it actually renders faster. Below is a comparison of the two. I do see where you get a more varied shading rate on the skin in the Tutorial settings using IDL - but the difference is rather minimal unless you're doing a close up of the face. That is: from a distance, there's not going to be a noticable difference. But of course that's a matter of choice.

Well, now liking the results will have to use them on one of mine and see what happens.

I know you haven't had time to delve into it - so my questions were for whenever you do.

I know you probably would have preferred I used V4 but I wanted to see if what he said about the hair was true and well...ya know. I couldn't have posted it here. Then there's the whole issue where boy nipples are viewable but girl ones aren't.
