What Is Anime & Manga?
« on: May 10, 2018, 01:59:19 AM »

According to Wikipedia - Anime is a style of hand-drawn and computer animation originating in, and commonly associated with, Japan. The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media.Outside Japan, anime refers specifically to animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes. The first Japanese anime to reach commercial status is 1917 and it has steady increase in frequency and popularity every since. The characteristic style everyone is familiar with today began in the 1960's and spread internationally in the late twentieth century.  It has seen international success after the rise of English-dubbed programming. This rise in international popularity has resulted in non-Japanese productions using the anime art style, but these works are regularly considered by some as anime influenced animation rather than proper anime, especially when swaying far from the stylized standard. A lot of anime is based off of Manga, which is a type of Japanese comic or graphic novel.
One downside to anime is the western cultures thinking anime is just cartoons, which is far from the truth. In fact, most anime is geared to adults, not children, that is a western concept. Also, the west is quite good at taking known Japanese anime, altering some scenes and a good chunk of dialogue, to make it safe for television and children.

I love manga  :sure: now I have new tablet and used to read it on some apps for free. Anime is also nice but I prefer games and RPG :)

I am a big fan of anime yet not so big on manga. I like books and manga. Manga is opposite to our comics in the way it is read and set up. I don't read it very often as I get distracted easily. Usually I see anime which is based on manga. It is a good way for my husband and myself, or cousin and myself, to spend time with each other. With hubby at home and cousin on Skype provinces away from each other.

@MilosGulan - what kind of RPG? Do you mean video game RPG or old style D&D, pen and paper games? I play Elder Scrolls Online and have a D&D group I play with in person. Dice rolling whee

Wait, most people think of anime as for children? Really? Whoever wrote that in the Wiki is being so short sighted on the history of anime. Some of the major reasons for people to import anime at one time had been due to it's porn value and grittiness of even heroes being killed during battles. The robots were great but for many years the style had been similar to each other with both robots and the characters using them.

Sorry, sorry. Anything about anime and animation really makes me flustered sometimes. Children shows my arse. Some of the newer generation mayhaps.

Ok I'm backing off from that. The information is pretty good per se considering views of the genre has changed decade to decade. The base of it all is clear and true.

You're right, times are changing and how anime is looked at is changing, growing. I think it's taken this long because the people who have been at it for so long are resisting change, it's very common in all aspects of life. You also have to consider that no one wants something that is traditionally theirs to be taken by someone else and mass produced and claimed, I can sympathize with the Japanese in this regard.
As for those who consider anime being for children, I believe they are talking about those who don't watch it or saw one to two things and jumped to conclusions. It's 2D, colorful, has fantasy characters and stories and such, to them it's no different then loonie toons or the Disney movies. Many think manga is just comics, because it's done in a similar fashion as comics. Hand drawn images put together to tell a story. They can't see the difference.  Point in case is my daughter. I was trying to tell her about the series Monster. She is a major fan of CSI and refuses to even consider watching Monster. If it was turned into a live action series she would jump on it.
If people wanted to be truly honest about anime and cartoons, many of those Disney movies are based of stories that were designed to teach children, and in some cases adults, and many are by no means without blood, guts, sex and horror.

Yes, I wish I have more time to watch it and sure that lots of things can be learned from those stories.
