Title: Problems with posting your posts?
Post by: DarkAngel on August 14, 2018, 04:53:37 PM
Many of you have noticed that when we post here we used to get the spaces between the paragraphs like we should be getting, but now just get a jumbled year long post.....no separating the paragraphs any more.

Resulting in this look:

In order to get the required spacing you need to hit the enter key 3 times or write it out in your text editor then copy/paste it into the posting window.

That is just no fun cause for me I tend to forget then it takes longer to post...I am lazy!

So a work around that will take getting the hang of and remembering to do is for me much easier.....Just click the little arrow box (see image).

Your posting window will show you the mess you wrote or a blank window if just starting to post. Type your stuff in with spaces where needed and then to check to see if it looks right just click the Preview button to the right of the Post button.

Once you have it the way you want it to look then hit Post and it will let us read it too.

Hope this helps cause I have contacted SMF and on the off chance TinyPortal and the latter can't make it happen on their forum and SMF claims it is doing things the right way and it must be my comp...but there are many of you that it is happening to also (which I told them to no avail) and you all do not have my computer...LOL

Oooooooooooooooooooooh. So, it's NOT just me going senile. I THOUGHT I remembered this not happening before.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still going senile I think. It's just that it's apparently not evident in THIS case.  :tearlaugh:

Thanks DA.

I have no idea what you're talking about, Mary.  :lostme:

I don't have any problems.

Is it a browser issue? Or is it the SMF?

It drove me up the friggin wall to say the least. Getting nowhere with the forum creators I ave tried many things aside from reinstalling the forum with new files...although as soon as they do a forum update for security or whatever, I will see if that straightens things out...LOL

Ya never know. But for now this work around is the best I came up with without finding a way to let them experience the same thing  :phfft: :ifonly:

Well that is what they said it must be my comp, SMF claims it does what it's supposed to do but it does it on their forum too, at PFD forum and here but not at some of the other SMF forums. It happens with Chrome, IE, FF, and Safari on my mac and Dawn's pc and Crystal's too.

I heard where some will experience it with FF and not the others, some with Chrome  and not the others and it is not just here but everywhere.

So beats me but I know there are others out there with the same issue. And it was just after this last update to both the Portal and forum. The portal is ruled out since it is not with the most current software due to it going to create getting used to its new thing....the side blocks mainly.

I typically don't have an issue posting in a forum like this but, when I am post a pic and putting commentary below it, it seems to all want to run together.

Every once in a while I just get extra line spaces which just means I wind up doing a quick modify to clean it up a touch.

The Gallery works totally differently than the threads in here, Mike. That's not a glitch. It's how it's always worked. In the Gallery, it will all run together unless you use spaces in the right places. Edit it as J said, but didn't say how.

Pretend this text is in the description box:

Say this is some text that I'm writing in the gallery. If I
want to control the length of the lines (Return)
I would break it like this. About one and 2/3s line in the
box equals one decent length line. (Return)
(Return)
If I want another paragraph then I have to hit the Return
button again. (Return)
(Return)
You don't really type (Return) but hit the Return button.
Try it!

"enter" or "return" twice eh Ray? Yeah. I think that is what I've had to do in the past too. No idea why one should have to though.

Well, I guess because otherwise it just keeps going and going :tearlaugh:

Don't you do that when you type anyway? It can't read your mind...yet.

 And would you really want it to?

Yeah.... It's your computer....... :tearlaugh:
Rule number 1 when you work in ANY kind of "tech support" role: "It's ALWAYS the other guy's computer."
Rule # 2: "It's ALWAYS the other guy's software / router / ISP / etc."
Rule # 3: "It's NEVER our software / hardware. It always works perfectly."
Trust me on this..... :thissmall: :AEN: Makes you want to  :kaboom: the hoser on the other end of the phone when you call in for a little support.

I love those that talk to you like you are just another stupid woman that knows nothing and then even sound condescending. I wait for them to take a breath since many interrupt or just use all their hot air up.

Then I start in telling them all the troubleshooting I did prior to calling their little bodies and really laugh when they tell me that clearing the computer cache via terminal for mac or run in windows they did not know of that. Then I tell them that even now I do some tech support for apple forums and started with a possessed computer so they are really my last resort. :ifonly:

Along the centuries I've learned to byte the bullet and accept the 'local' rules as they are without trying to argue them - it's just a waste of resources.

Even more of a waste is trying to communicate with those airheads supposed to provide technical support: occasionally the thought crosses my head that all they have is a microphone, for they seem unable to hear whatever you're trying to say. Or maybe it's just a kind of occupational disease, I don't know.

However, more to the point: I never suspected that there was an automatic paragraph space feature in this forum software, so whenever I need to separate two paragraphs I just hit 'enter' once more and that's it.
I use the 'toggle view' only when I need some special effect for writing directly in html is a PITA and I'm as lazy as the next centaur

Are you talking about the 'paragraph feature' where you set up what your indentations are and how many spaces it goes down? That's the only 'automatic paragraph' feature I can think of. That goes with Word and to some degree Word Pad, not any forum software I was ever in - not at Rendo, here, DSA or anywhere else. Even if there was any such thing, you would still have to hit Enter or Return twice to tell it you want line space(s) there...wouldn't you? It can't read your mind that you want a paragraph without hitting Enter.

 :lostme:

I'm sorry if I'm being dense but I just don't get it, otherwise.

that was what I was trying to get SMF to understand.hit return/enter 1 time to drop to next line, hit it 2times to get the line space between the paragraphs but I end up hitting the thing 3 times to get it to set right. once or twice still will not give the paragraph line.

Mary I have had the same issue at both forums. Complained in the threads I was responding in about it. 3 CRs to skip a line. Happens with 3 different browsers on three different OSes.  FF, IE, Chrome on W10, W8.1, and W7. It doesn't appear to be script blockers either. I run them on everything and their removal makes no difference. Any less than 3 CRs and there is no new paragraph. Just one big run-on WOT

Ohhh.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. It works like that for me, I shall affirm.

Is it a browser issue? Or is it the SMF?
It's because we use smileys (that put immediately 1 line of difference in a direction or the other) or put ourselves a line between 2 paragraphs.

I never saw there was an issue because I go to the line, then the line again if necessary with the keyboard button. I saw well the button with other buttons above smileys, but never sought to know what it was

Yup, I still have to post work around at PFD too but as usual I am behind :sure:

I'm BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK! Sorry Ray. I went to bed before your reply.

Yup. I do two returns normally if I want to leave a space between lines. But when posting a pic and leaving commentary below it, if I do two - one to start a new line and one to leave a space - when I save it comes out as all one paragraph.
I think in the past I may have done three or four returns.
I shall have to experiment the next time I post.  :whatthe:

As long as you hit Enter/Return after every 1 2/3 to 2 lines of text, you'll get a nice line, Mike. Then two Enters for the paragraph.

As said before, that's not a 'problem' with the Gallery. It's just how it is.

Well, if that's the way it works, it sounds like a problem to me.  That's not normal.  One return = a new line. A second return = a space. That's normal. What the gallery is doing just SEEMS normal to you because you're used to it.

Hmmmm, DE I didn't realize this exact thing is happening in the gallery. I am going to talke a peek and see what I can try there but I have not had it happen there, course some images with long text I use a text editor then paste it in to the description area of the image.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it.
Please let me know if you find anything out.
