Title: OMG I need help......
Post by: RainbowGypsy on March 11, 2018, 08:28:52 PM
Hey everyone, so it has been ages since I've added anything into my poser runtimes. I'm running Poser Pro 2014 and I recently purchased the Freak 5. I can not for the life of me, get it to install properly? The download from Daz is a zip file that's first level is Content - then below that is the Runtime  Data  and People. So how do I get this to work?

I know my brain isn't working like it used to LOL but it shouldn't be this hard???  I have a major runtime folder that I usually have characters in. Then other runtimes for clothes and props etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
One frustrated RainbowGypsy  :tearlaugh:

The Freak 5 is a Genesis figure that was made for DAZ Studio and then, it can't work as is with Poser.
If you want to use it with Poser, you must have the DSON plugin, which allows to use DAZ Genesis and Genesis 2 figures with Poser.
Otherwise, the Freak 5 can be used only with DAZ.
All the DAZ zip files have a root directory named 'content', but it doesn't mean it's poser content.

Yes, "data" and "people" are special folders for DS4.

Alas, since Genesis first generation, all Daz characters need to DSON to be used in Poser.

Well that explains why nothing is working. Ok, so I have to install DSON and then the genesis first generation characters for the Freak to work? Does DSON have to be installed directly into the main runtime folder or can it be in the character Runtime folder I have for V4 M4 and Freak5 for it to work

Good question which I can't answer because I never used nor installed DSON. My 'problem' is I use DS4 for all Genesis generations, and Poser or DS3 for all other characters.
I think one or two members of forum maybe use DSON.

Thanks Aelin, did you use Poser first? I wonder how hard it is to learn DS4 - I've never used any version of it and wonder how different it is. What is your favourite of the two programs

I began with DS3, and it's what I use mainly always. I had (and have again) some issues with DS4 - but what I have like issues, others haven't necessarily. DS4 is weird for that  :tearlaugh:
Then I won Poser here and time to time I use it. I'm so slow inside that it's not my first choice to do scenes, it's all.

So between these 3? Well DS3 stays my favorite.
But only between Poser and DS4, it's definitively Poser.

I left the link toward this topic in the coffee shop, hoping somebody will come and help you with DSON.

DS4 is different of Poser on textures for example like you haven't Material Room. It's really harder than DS3 and I haven't understood everything inside DS4 possibilities.
It's one reason for why I use also just what is offered by artists, their own textures.
Btw, if never you try DS4, be sure to don't use Iray; that asks many power to your computer, for a long time of render.
Poser in Superfly mode asks less, even if it asks more than firefly.

Hi, RainbowGypsy.

So Freak 5 is in two parts.  The one called just "Freak 5" is the Studio part.  There's another once called "Freak 5 PoserCF" and it has the additional files you need to make Freak 5 work in Poser.  The PoserCF in the name is for Poser Companion File.  You'll need the contents of that package as well as the DSON importer to get things going.

Hope that helps!  Just in case, here's a dancing knight.

Hello RainbowGypsy,

I'm McGrandpa, and use Poser Pro 2014 and Poser Pro 11.1, and use DSON with both.   First, exit Poser.   Then, DSON must be installed into your Poser program folders.  It is a .PY or python script, and it won't work with Poser any other way.   Next, restart Poser.  Look under Scripts on the menu bar.  You should see DSON Support, slide right on it and see Preferences.  Open that one.  Make changes, they take immediately.
OK now, DSON operates transparent to the User.   You should now see whatever DSON supported material the Importer script finds.  It will simply put it in your library.
I use the DAZ People runtime for my importer because that is just about the only place its needed.  Figures, Characters, Clothing, Accessories. All there for the Genesis and higher Figures.  Nowhere else.
Hope it Helps!
Time for doctor visit.  ugh!  long day ahead...

From a tute I posted on PFD a couple of years back. Genesis 1 or 2. Genesis 3 just export FBX to use in Poser.

**************

To get Genesis 2 M/F working in Poser you need the following from DAZ. All are free.

DSON Importer for Poser
Genesis2Female Starter Essentials
Genesis2Female Starter Essentials PoserCF
Genesis2Male Starter Essentials
Genesis2Male Starter Essentials PoserCF

Optional but a good idea. Again free.

Genesis2 DMC
Templates Genesis2Male and Genesis2Female

*******************************************************

Good, now we can start.

1. Run the DSON Importer. It asks for the location of Poser. Mine asked for PP2012 but I have an old DSON file. The newest one may ask for PP2014. Point it to Poser. Poser is located in "YourDriveLetter/ProgramFiles/Smith Micro". You may need Administrator priviledges to do this.

2. Go to where your Runtimes live. Usually My Documents or Public Documents. Make a new folder. I called mine "Genesis Stuff". Use whatever name you want.

3. Unzip the Genesis2Female Started Essentials into the new "Genesis Stuff" folder you've made. Inside you will find a Content folder and 2 dsx files. Open the Content folder and you will find a bunch more folders inside. Select everything and copy/paste it up one level. In other words copy and paste all these folders to your "Genesis Stuff" folder. Right next to the Content folder you copied everything from in the first place.

4. Delete the Content folder you took everything from. Now do the same for the PoserCF file. Unzip and copy everything from Content up one level to "Genesis Stuff" and delete the Content folder.

5. Open Poser and add a new Runtime. When Poser asks you to find this new Runtime point it to your "Genesis Stuff" folder.

Congrats. You now have Genesis2Female working in Poser. Do the same with the G2Male or any other DAZ product you buy. Select everything in the Content folder of the ZIP and move it up one level.

There is a lag in Poser as the DSON script is called almost every mouse click you make but it is acceptable.

PDG, I think Freak 5 is Genesis, not Genesis 2.

You are so right hon! Thank you all so much.... I've got it working and finally figured out that the textures from daz reside in materials and not pose..... Ok maybe I'll actually get to do some rendering now.

Thank you all so much. It works I can load Freak 5 and a new character I got Lycaon which is this a werewolf. Now I just have to figure out how to make his texture look like it does on the product page where I bought him from Daz. I've used the presets but none of the options have the furry effect I'm hoping for. I checked to see if there was a readme that would help me figure out what settings I may need to change. I guess its time for me to do some tutorials in Poser to figure  out how to do things like that. Or maybe it is all done in postwork afterwards....

I've always used poser but in the past make many of my changes in postwork. I was hoping that I could get this character to look a bit more werewolfy with fur before I started that LOL.....

Thanks everyone

That product uses the Look At My Hair DAZ plugin in all of the promotional images except the last one.  LAMH is a DAZ Studio only item, so you'll probably have trouble in Poser.

There are Poser experts here who may be able to suggest Poser hair generation equivalents, but I'm not one of them.   :cry2:

Thanks, the things you don't know when you buy stuff. So really when it comes down to it - some daz products don't work as well in poser. "Look at my hair" for daz is that yet another thing you need to buy or does it come with Daz Studio?

There's a free player.  You only need to buy the fancy one if you want to make your own hair.  The player is not included with Studio.

DAZ has a liberal return policy -- you could return it if becomes too big a mess.

I think the free player is at

Ultimately the morph is great and I just need to figure out how to create my own hairy texture that adds a bit more detail. I really appreciate you getting back to me. I've been away from my art for way too long and really in a lot of ways only used the surface of the programs. I really want to do more now. I've missed creating art. I just sometimes need a lesson in patience LOL

Thanks again

Ha ha ha!  Easy now, lots of the Genesis/Genesis2 characters and clothing do reside in Materials, where Pose keeps those items poses.  SOME items, clothing as well as characters, will have their texture poses in Pose.  Some artists put them in both.  And there are the very rare ones that put everything under the Figure in Character.  And, DSON makes that work, but you will never see that in Poser without DSON.

PDG and I get to the same end via different routes.  I absolutely detest the use of the "USER" folders for anything other than vital system stuff.  Which is  why I directed you to the locations I did.   So, there are viable choices.  There is no absolute in this, as long as you get the python in the right place, Poser will run it every time it starts up.  Then you will see that content you've been missing.  Cool Beans!  :o)

Thanks McGrandpa, your right and I'm just getting back into all of this.  There are different ways to access things. The important thing like you said that I was missing was DSON.

I really appreciate all the help

PDG, I think Freak 5 is Genesis, not Genesis 2.

First sentence. Either Genesis 1 or 2. Same instructions, Genesis 3 export as FBX.

I don't use DAZ products and as such don't know how the mats are laid out on Lycaon. That being said; I can show you how to fur a creature in Poser. It isn't a one paragraph answer but the short version is use the material zones or the Grouping Tool to define the places you want hair and to grow it in the Hair Room. Lycaon may have material zones where the hair grows you can use as a base in the Hair Room.

Again with the PFDLives but I've posted numerous tutorials on this subject over there. Hair/fur can be grown on anything without the need of extra addons in Poser and the Look at my Hair add on isn't going to function outside of DS.

My sole purpose was to avoid confusion.  Your original did not include "Same instructions".  Genesis 1 has no distinction between male and female in the base figure so, as the rest of the directions included both male and female, I was trying to be helpful.
