After some extended discussion about who was the most promising to descend into the shaft, the most unlikely was picked: Eve.
Her suit was more flexible than the armor and so would fit better in the shaft. And her arms and legs were cyborg and so would last longer in the long vertical climb.
About halfway down, the lighting failed in the next shaft segment. After some hesitation on her part and encouragement from those still looking down, she continued to the bottom.
