The Changeling

He looked like any other young man, when Henry met him. He said he was trying to find something in an old box there on his mother's farm. Henry, having been a good friend of the parents in life reckoned as how he did look somewhat like his father, decided to help the young man.

By some odd happenstance, Henry found that very box and gave it to the young man. He opened the box and smiled, congratulating Henry. Suddenly the light around them turned a strange shade of glowing green and the young man became someone else - a Fae! That was plain to see by his strange beauty and stranger eyes. The Fae held his hands close but apart and began to utter some strange words. Likely the speech of the Fae, Henry reckoned. A beautiful key appeared between the Fae's hands, as if out of nowhere. "Take it!" he told Henry. "Find what it belongs to and the treasure is yours, for you have given me an even greater treasure that is mine alone. I was indeed their son, but the Faeries stole me and left a changeling in my place - a clever forgery of myself. Enjoy your good fortune for being a good neighbor!" He snapped his fingers then and was gone.

It was a skeleton key that might have fit anywhere. Thinking it was somewhere in that old farmhouse, Henry tried it in every key hole he could find to no avail. Depressed, he went home to his own place. Out of what had become a habit now, he stuck the key in his own front door. Lo and behold, the door to his house opened as if by an unseen hand. There waiting at the table was his dear sweet wife, with a pint of beer and some wonderful smelling barley porridge with fresh baked bread and new-made butter. She smiled and bade him sit down at the new table on a new chair. He looked around and everything was like new.

And suddenly, Henry realized that his dear old home and wife who always cooked like an angel and kept him fat and happy was his real treasure. "It smells delicious, my dear," he said. "Sorry I'm late. I got a little confused when I was out. Lost ya might say! I'm fine as a fiddle now, though!"

After a few more pints however, Henry thought to himself "Wait a minute! He weren't no changeling! He had them Fae eyes! In truth what did I give him in that box?" A cold chill flowed over him. He looked around and he was alone. Nothin' looked new any more. What on Earth had just happened? Henry drank another pint and passed out. When he awoke the next morning, he had no memory whatsoever of any of it.

Things to do with the Fae are always strange, ye know!

*****

Those strange eyes watch you and your reactions constantly. Nothing escapes him. He has the soul of a manipulator and deceiver.

Great story. It's very like other European fairy tales I've read. Well done!
