A Christmas morning surprise
|
The Three Lanes roommates had a tradition of discussing the year's events over drinks on Christmas morning. Being college students, the beverage of choice was beer.
This year the discussion was at Monica's father's lodge in the snowy North. In a warm room overlooking the snow covered field at the lodge's rear, they had begun.
Millie had taken her motorcycle to Daytona and disappeared for two days after they'd gotten settled in their hotel rooms. She'd returned without comment but smiling for the first time in a long while.
Cassie, Monica and Bianca had described in great detail the events from this year's Mardi Gras trip. They'd awoken in their room but had clearly exchanged clothes at some point during the night. None could recall why.
Angela excitedly related her Bible camp experiences. The others listened politely, asking questions and acknowledging her accomplishments.
Jun, Monica's driver and sometimes body guard, had responded oddly to questions about his Daytona experience, dodging the "Where did you stay?" and "What did you do?"
Cassie was the first to make the connection. She noticed that Jun was looking away. Then she saw that Millie was as well.
Angela said, "Ohhhh."
